When one of the broody Anconas offers a rare pose I'm obliged to take a photo before she disappears back onto her nest for another two weeks.

It's 98 degrees outside with 90% humidity and severe thunderstorms are slated to come through within an hour.. so what am I doing? Laying fresh woodchips down in one of the grow out pens because I procrastinated the last two days. And even though I'm probably going to keel over from heat exhaustion at least the babies won't be muddy and can stay nice and dry (especially once I put the shelter back in place).

Also peek Hawke, one of our LGDs, lounging in the shade and keeping an eye on the littles.

Night owl activities; pulling a fresh batch of Ancona babies out of the hatcher. And then putting another 60 eggs collected eariler today into the incubator. The cabinet incubator is full yet again and this is the time of the year I start considering how many more rounds of Anconas I want to hatch. I've learned that when I say "only one more group" that actually means 2 more groups and then a 3rd one for good measure.

Early morning fresh water frenzy in one of the grow out groups. Side note: they have a huge pen but they converged on me like rabid sharks so it looks more crowded than it really is. They also have another 5 water tubs not pictured so the decision to pack themselves like sardines into the pools was entirely of their own volition.

We've had a late start to our Muscovy season due to the girls taking their sweet time to start laying after an unusually long (and cold) winter. But our first hatch of exhibition blacks and chocolates is finally here with several more nests due over the next two weeks.

And of course we still have Anconas hatching so somehow things are going to get even more exciting and chaotic around here! I would say I wouldn't have it any other way but exprience tells me I will not have the same sentiment two months from now.

I also included photos of the dad and mom of these cuties just for fun.

I'm out here retagging juveniles before moving them into their outdoor pen (photos coming soon!) and I can't decide if I feel like I'm in Toy Story or in the old Windows desktop wallpaper. Either way I'm all for it after nearly 2 weeks of rain and forgetting the sky is supposed to be blue.

This hatch may have been small number wise but their patterns sure are mighty! Now let's hope their wings get the memo and feather in just as nice.

It's not uncommon to get a beautifully marked baby whose wings then feather in minimally marked and suddenly you have a high white adult who doesn't display the breed type pattern. That's another reason why I'll admire a cute baby but I can't get excited about them and jinx it.

A smattering of some fun chocolate Anconas I'm eager to see feather out. They themselves did not care how cute they are, however, and saw zero reason for there to be a camera in their face.

We had a single Ancona hatch a few days before the rest of the group. He is too small to go into the big indoor brooder with the others so we decided to pull some calm lavender Muscovy ducklings to keep him company in the "newborn" brooder until the rest of his group hatches. I don't think they mind!
