Out of the incubator and into the brooder! Our first trial of hatching chicks with an incubator was a success.

Updated: The farm stand is still open, but after several freezes on the farm, selection will be a bit more limited. We’ll have delicata and butternut squash, pumpkins, eggs, maple syrup, garlic, some onions, and possibly kale for this next bit of time.

Thanks to all who visited the stand this season! We appreciate you. While it is still a very small stand, our goal is to keep building it each growing season.

Happy Fall! 🍂

The veggie stand is still open. We have some fall items available including squash, pumpkins, and more corn! 🌽 🎃 The lettuce cooler has been restocked. Also, we have an abundance of peppers. 🫑 They are an excellent veggie that can be frozen easily for winter use.

Swing by!

Hello!

Since many have asked, I wanted to eliminate any confusion about this type of vegetable… This is a pole bean (Northeaster Pole Bean). It is a heirloom variety, like the kind your grandma used to grow. With a flattened pod (Roma style), these beans are long and slender, and grow on tall robust trellised vines. They are crisp and tender with a pleasantly sweet taste, even sweeter than a typical bush bean. They can be prepped and cooked just like bush beans, by boiling or steaming. They can also be blanched, then sautéed or grilled to your liking.

We have bunches of them at the farm stand. Give em’ a try! - CCF

We had a broody leghorn hen that decided to nest in the back corner of the barn. While typically we harvest the eggs regardless (and order chicks by mail), we decided to let this hen do her thing to see what would happen. When I walked into the barn this afternoon I met mother hen and her 12 new hatchlings! The rooster is a beautiful Buff Orpington. The eggs were laid from three heritage breed hen varieties (Leghorns, Barred Rocks, and Buff Orpingtons), so the brood should be an interesting mix of hybridized chicks!

Late May is exciting because it’s the time when there is visible growth inside the hoop houses. The kale and lettuce plants are coming along nicely inside G3 and are almost ready for early harvesting. Thanks to our interim K-9 Supervisor (Wilson) for making May farming at CCF just a bit more enjoyable!
