Veterans Conservation Corps VCC Mission: Serve those who served by providing veterans with self-directed connections to the lands, waters, and communities in WA State.

The VCC provides opportunities for veterans to do meaningful work in conserving and restoring natural ecosystems with our environmental conservation and agricultural community partner organizations. We support veterans in establishing and maintaining healthy reciprocal relationships with nature and their community so that through their own efforts they may increase their self-efficacy and resiliency and realize a positive shift in their mental, emotional, and physical well-being. To further support their efforts, VCC interns receive training and resources on veteran-related topics that empower them to address and overcome any challenges that they may experience in their transition from the military.

This week is National Farm Safety and Health Week, and would like to honor our farmers, ranchers, and agricultural workers who contribute so much to our state, but also the world! There are over 6,000 Veterans in our agricultural community in Washington State, many of whom reside in rural counties.

Seeking assistance and asking for help continues to be a challenge for some, with continued stigma being a barrier to health, wellness, and su***de prevention efforts in both the agricultural and Veteran communities.

We are grateful for our partners who serve Veterans in this space, and there are resources available which further promotes health and safety during this important week: https://loom.ly/BlGMID0

If you or someone you know is a farmer, rancher, or agricultural worker, there are support available for those in crisis:

AgriStress Helpline: 833-897-2474 (24/7)
Farm Aid: 1-800-FARM-AID (6 AM–6 PM PT)
Veterans Crisis Line: 988, Option 1

This weekend the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Conservation Corps (VCC) program alumni joined forces with GRuB Olympia to build a new garden for a senior apartment complex!

This project was to replace aging garden beds at the apartment complex that were built by GRuB 20+ years ago. With numerous staff and volunteers, old beds were removed in record time and replaced with eight new garden beds, filled with fresh garden soil and sturdy trellises for growing vines.

Big smiles all around from the residents, who especially look forward to growing food this season in the new higher elevated beds meant to reduce bending and stooping for those that have mobility issues.

Thank you GRuB staff and VCC interns for all your hard work — happy growing, everyone! 🪴 🍅 🫛
