We had an awesome meeting last night! A big thanks to Kros Strain Brewing Company for hosting us! It's always so much fun when we take our meetings on the road, supporting local businesses, especially local breweries and beer-focused establishments.

Here are the minutes:

BUV Meeting minutes from May 12th, 2026

The meeting was called to order at 7:15 pm with 35 people in attendance.

Business was kept to a minimum because we had a special meeting at Kros Strain (KS) Brewing Co. to hold our mini-competition judging clone homebrew examples of KS’s famed Fairy Nectar Hazy IPA.

Tad began the competition with the history of KS and how they developed this award-winning beer. It was fun to hear about and even more fun getting to drink Fairy Nectar and homebrew examples in the barrel room of KS.

For this competition, Scot created scoring sheets to compare homebrew examples with actual Fairy Nectar. Four sensory profiles were used: Aroma, appearance, flavor, and mouthfeel. Each category was scored on a scale of 1-5 based on how closely the sample matched Fairy Nectar. Each member judging was given actual Fairy Nectar to compare to. After the judging, the points were tallied to determine whose beer was the closest example.

The following brewers submitted beer to the competition: Scott M, Scot, Jerrold, Kent, Ron, and Steve R.

All the beers were exceptionally brewed. And here are the results:
Scott M - 376 pts
Scot - 442 pts
Jerrold - 352 pts
Kent - 361 pts
Ron - 470 pts
Steve R - 447 pts
It was quite the competition, but in the end, Ron’s Fairy Nectar Clone was voted as the best clone of the bunch. Way to go, Ron, and well done to all the brewers!

However, the competition is not over. Each brewer also bottled their beer, and the brewers at KS will hold their own competition to see which beer they think is the best clone. Results aren’t out yet, but it’s sure to be a nail-biter.

We want to thank KS for hosting last night. It was awesome to get to hang out with BUV members at the brewery. Stay tuned for future announcements for holding our meetings at other local breweries and beer establishments throughout the greater Omaha area.

Our next meeting is on June 10th, 2026, at 7:00 pm in the German American Society Rathskeller. The style to brew is a mystery hop SMaSH beer. Happy brewing and drinking! And remember, “relax, don’t worry, have a homebrew.” - Charlie Papazian

14 homebrews last night!!! It was an awesome meeting. The enthusiasm and participation in this GAS sub-org are truly amazing. Thanks, everyone, for coming out last night!

Here are the minutes:

BUV Meeting minutes from April 8th, 2026

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm with 27 people in attendance.

First order of business was introducing and welcoming two new members to the BUV: Scott and Eli. Welcome, and we hope you had a great experience at our meeting.

The meeting kicked off with Vorstand Jeremy discussing BUV business. The following business items were discussed:

Jeremy’s Key Lime Pie beer will be officially on tap soon at Stone Hollow Brewing Company in Beatrice, NE. Jeremy will be heading down on 4/18, so if anyone wants to go with him to drink his beer brewed at a professional brewery, contact him before then.

The annual Bars and Brewers camping trip is April 24th through 26th. Contact Jeremy for more information.

We are still determining whether the BUV wants to provide the official Maibock beer for this year’s Maifest, as well as whether we want to set up our club tent at the festival. Discussions are continuing, so hopefully we will have a solid answer soon.

Scot provided an update on the 2026 Nebraska Shootout competition. Due to the GAS board's determination that the BUV must cover the cost of renting the North Hall and its other stipulations regarding the integration of Stein Night into the competition, the shootout committee has decided NOT to hold the competition at the GAS. The shootout will now be on August 1st at Kros Strain Brewing Co. A huge thanks to Kros Strain for saving this year’s competition!!!

After the conclusion of business, Tad provided us with this month’s beer style history lesson. The lesson focused on the history of a very traditional German ale known as Weissbier (aka hefeweizen). Once again, it was a very informative and engaging lesson from Tad!

For June’s beer style, we are brewing a SMASH (Single Malt Single Hop) beer. However, a twist is that you have to brew with a mystery hop, not of your choosing. So, last night, Jeremy randomly gave each brewer a different type of hop to use. Additionally, the SMASH beer must be brewed with only Pale 2-row malt, your assigned mystery hop, and US-05 yeast.

This month’s beer style was any beer brewed with at least 25% wheat. Beers with at least 25% wheat received a Doug point in the voting tally. The following members brought homebrew and how many votes they received:
Jeremy - Bavarian Hefeweizen (7)
Steve R - Raspberry Hefeweizen (6)
Scott R - American Wheat Ale (3)
Jerrold - Bavarian Hefeweizen (1)
Tim - American Wheat Ale (2)
Emil - Hoppy Wheat Ale (4)
Doug - Cherry Wheat Ale (2)
Adam - Honey Wheat Ale (3)
Scot - English Pale Ale (1)
Todd - Pete’s Wicked Ale Clone (1)
Steve T - Lambic (4)
Adam - Uncultured AF ale (0)

Because we have such amazing brewers in the BUV, all the beers were excellent, making voting difficult. However, after some close voting, Jeremy’s hefeweizen won, and he was crowned this month’s Beer King! Way to go, Jeremy, and thanks to all brewers who brought homebrew to share!

Our next meeting is on May 13th, 2026, at 7:00 pm in the German American Society Rathskeller. The style to brew is a clone of Kros Strain’s Fairy Nectar Hazy IPA. We will be having a mini competition to see who can brew the best Fairy Nectar clone. Happy brewing and drinking! And remember, “relax, don’t worry, have a homebrew.” - Charlie Papazian
