We are a small, family owned and operated farm located in Omaha, Nebraska. We believe in all-natural beekeeping, and do not use chemicals around the food we grow or the plants our bees pollinate. Our farm and surrounding acres give our bees abundant access to early tree blossoms, wildflowers, and sweet clovers. This spring we inter-seeded 20 different flowers and clovers in our pastures to provide
good nectar and pollen sources from early spring to fall. Our goal is to provide the bees with enough honey stores to survive winter without having to feed them sugar since they are healthier and better off eating real honey. All of the bees that we have in our yard are all locally caught swarms. The goal is to catch wild honey bees during swarm season which runs from May to June. We prefer swarms since they tend to be more disease-resistant and adaptive to our winters. Swarming is a natural occurrence where the queen leaves with half of the hive in an attempt to find a new home and start a colony. This spring, we had really good luck and 20 swarms found our swarm traps. Once caught, we take them back home and transfer the frames into their permanent hive. We build their "homes" (bee boxes) from scratch, and use only untreated wood. We do not use any plastic in our hives and try to keep them as natural as possible. To protect the flavors of the honey as well as the health benefits, we simply spin it from the comb, put it through a coarse filter, and jar it. That's it! In addition to our honey, we grow a variety of produce including sweet corn, squash, zucchini, green beans, carrots, broccoli, potatoes, watermelon, honeydew, and cantaloupe. We have also been getting amazing fruit from our raspberry, blueberry, blackberry and strawberry plants. Our grapes are coming in nicely on the vine as well and we can't wait for our fruit trees to start producing! We also have chickens nestled right next to our garden and enjoy farm fresh eggs daily.
