Weeknight Takeout Favs

We’re living the kind of busy life parents know oh so well. Which means dinner either happens at 4pm or 10pm. This also means, it’s not always homemade. 😬

But it also means, we’ve collected a list of our fav weeknight takeout spots that are easy, affordable and delicious.

Monday: Big Red Keno might not be on your radar for food, but it should be! Especially on Monday nights when wings are .75. You can get them traditional or boneless. They’re big and meaty and well-sauced. And they have a great selection of flavors from intensely spicy to sweet and savory.

Tuesday: Some of the best fried tacos in town are not actually from a taco place. Goodlife Bar and Grill is serving up terrific tacos and on Tuesdays, they’re literally $1.50/piece. Yes, you read that right. $1.50 for a big taco w/ lots of toppings and a huge side of sour cream = Weeknight Winning!

Wednesday: Lighthouse Bar and Grill comes in clutch Wednesday evenings with $10 1-Topping Pizzas. Not only are they cheap, but they’re also so dang good. We love a jalapeño pizza with gooey cheese and a crispy crust. Whether we get one for an at-home date night or a couple to feed the family, we never go wrong with a little Lighthouse takeout.

Thursday: This isn’t a deal necessarily. And honestly, it’s from a chain. Don’t judge us! But recently we had the best experience at Dave’s Hot Chicken, so I’ve been looking for a way to plug it. It’s technically fast food, which puts it in our cheap and easy category. But it’s also so tasty. On our last visit, I tried their fried cauliflower sando and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.

Friday-Weekend: At the top of our takeout list is Gyro Kings. It’s somehow exciting every time we go while also being a version of comfort food we can’t get enough of. The portions are huge. The price is spectacular. And the best part? It travels so well. So whether you’re taking it home to fuel your Netflix and Chill or taking it to a bar to enjoy some cocktails, this takeout will make you oh so happy!

The Bearded Brewer + The Corner Kitchen

Omaha’s Microbrew Beer Scene is having a moment. And we are here for it! There’s nothing we love more than a laidback brewery, several good pints, and a food truck to sustain the evening.

Up First: TBH, we’re North people. We live north of Dodge. We shop north of Dodge. We do almost all we can north of Dodge. If you’re a longtime Omahan, you can probably relate to where we’re coming from. Dodge is a strict dividing line that keeps us in our individual quadrants. But, when we heard the legends of The Bearded Brewer, we just had to venture south and find out if they were true.

We’re happy to report that it was worth the trip! The Bearded Brewer is serving up beautiful beers that will keep you coming back, no matter what side of town you live on. While the husband likes to explore the full spectrum of beer from PBR to the dark stuff you basically have to chew, I’m an IPA girlie to my core. So I was thrilled with so many delicious options to choose from. Add in a cool space, chill vibes, and an accommodating staff, and this night out was spectacular.

Dinner: Since it’s kind of out in the middle of nowhere-ish, we appreciated the rotating food truck list for weekend nights. And we were thrilled to get The Corner Kitchen the night we stopped by. If you haven’t been lucky enough to try this food truck or restaurant, it genuinely needs to become a priority ASAP. The food is innovative and interesting. The portions are big and filling. And we’ve only ever wanted to lick our plates at the end. These guys know good food. And coincidentally, everything they make pairs perfectly with craft beer.

This night out was one we want to put on repeat. Even though it means crossing Dodge. Thank God for Uber!

30 Hop + Proof

If you’ve lived in Omaha for a while, you’re probably as awed by the Boystown construction projects as we are. Since our childhood, and before, that stretch of 144th and Dodge has been nothing but fields and the unexpected half of a dilapidated barn. Now it’s unrecognizable. Big business buildings, outdoor event spaces, car dealerships, and the relocation of several of Omaha’s fancy restaurant staples. But we were most excited about a new addition to the Omaha Restaurant Scene—30 Hop.

Dinner: While we were eager to try 30 Hop, we didn’t expect to have such a fantastic experience. Sometimes we can be a bit snobby, and on first approach, we expected chain-style vibes, food that’s been done before and tastes the same, and overall disappointment. Instead, we were blown away.

The covered patio is honestly one of the best in Omaha. It was well ventilated and despite the warm weather temps, we were cool and refreshed while still being able to enjoy an outdoor evening. We got extra lucky showing up during happy hour—which included half price appetizers and $6 Old Fashioneds. (It was a Tuesday) The cocktails were exceedingly well-made, and the appetizer we tried—The Brussels Sprouts—was fantastic. Our burgers were also especially good. And so big we took enough food home to feed us the next day. The atmosphere was relaxed, our waitress was excellent, and our bill at the end of happy hour with drink specials and entrees, felt like a bargain!

Up Next: The theme of the night was deal hunting. So we left 30 Hop and headed over to Proof on Maple for their Tequila Tuesdays. Proof is in our regular rotation because the craft cocktails are always expertly made and usually we can find a drink special to match our weeknight budget. Tuesdays highlight several great drinks for the low, low price of $6—making it a constant fav. We can’t get enough of their Ranch Water—the husband’s favorite—and their Kiwi Sour—my personal pick.

This Date Night Pair is only a couple-minutes’ drive apart and if you can hit both happy hours, you’ve really gotten a 5 ⭐️ night for a singular $ price.

Lola’s + Pageturners

An old fav but make it fancy!

It’s no secret that Pageturners is one of our Omaha favorites. It’s a bar that has everything we love and look for in a night out. Great drinks, great service, great vibes. There’s even a legendary bar dog who is the absolute sweetest. But an added bonus is the list of top tier restaurants nearby.

Dinner: We met friends for the loveliest meal at Lola’s. Directly across the street from Pageturners, this cozy and quaint cafe serves curated dishes that are elevated and thoughtful. Each entrée is a visual masterpiece complete with from-scratch specialties, beautiful extra touches, and brilliant flavor profiles. One of our friends is a vegetarian with dietary restrictions and Lola’s menu was up to the task. As for our own meals, we started with the Burrata—which was delicious. The husband had a Focaccia Steak Sando and I splurged (calorie wise haha!) on the Croque Monsieur with house-made Cornichons. While it’s connected to the Dundee Theater, and therefore busier than a normal restaurant with its walkthrough traffic, the food kept us transfixed on our table. The service was fantastic. And we had great company! Highly recommend!

Up Next: And no surprise to anyone, we planned the whole evening just to get to this point! Pageturners never lets us down. We had the privilege of introducing our friends to this gem and it was love at first sight for them as well. (As we knew it would be! 🥰) Seriously, you cannot go wrong with this one. Pull a chair up to the bar, grab a House Jam or sensational seasonal cocktail, and settle in for a gorgeous night. These guys know how to craft a drink, friends. And the atmosphere is just as memorable!

These two standouts paired as perfectly as our Burrata and pickled corn. All in all, a fantastic Omaha Date Night in the books.

Hiro + Backswing

Once upon a time our weekends were packed with outings. Before kids and sports and a long list of adult responsibilities, we were just kids in our twenties with the ability to drink copious amounts of alcohol and bounce back fresher than ever.

During that bygone era, we loved to frequent Hiro for their reverse happy hour. Our bank accounts were smaller back then and if we wanted to enjoy sushi, we were going to have to get it for a discount.

Which is what made Hiro’s happy hour our ultimate Hero. (See what I did there?)

Recently, we decided to take a walk down memory lane and see if our memories lived up to legend.

Spoiler alert: They did!

Up first: Backswing has sat nestled in the back corner of Eagle Run Square for a while now, but we had yet to find an opportunity to check it out. Within walking distance of Hiro, we had high hopes this microbrew would offer something delicious. And they delivered! We were impressed with their variety and the quality of the beer. The inside is spacious and welcoming. And the waitstaff was on it. 👏

Dinner: After a great sampling of Backswing beers, we meandered over to Hiro. Again, we were met with great service and great drinks. TBH the Make it Rain will always be one of my all-time fav Omaha originals. IYKYK. They also have some great sake and beer combos for a bargain—it’s basically BOGO! Plus a great plate of sushi at happy hour prices?! Why did we ever take this gem out of our weekend rotation? Some of our favs are the Wasabi Stinger, the Husker Roll (of course!), the Firecracker and the Cinco de Mayo. 🍱

Reverse happy hour runs from 10pm-12am Friday and Saturday. And all-day Sunday!

This Date Night Duo pairs perfectly together plus it only takes one Uber there and back to give you a whole night of fun. 💃🕺

Blatt + Trap Room

We’ve been absent for a bit as life has been busy! Fall sports’ season has kicked our butts. Date nights have been crammed between endless practice schedules and weekends full of kid activities. But that doesn’t mean we’ve just been sitting at home. Always up for a night away, we recently visited an old fav and a new fav.

Dinner: We used to be regulars Blatt Beer & Table - North Downtown. Hey, we’re on a perpetual lookout for Sunday-All-Day Happy Hour! But it had been a minute since we’d ventured to NoDo to visit their downtown location. We had questions upon our return visit. Would the ambiance be as lovely as we remembered? Yes it was. The big garage doors opened to a lovely fall night. The urban vibes. The fantastic service. 👏 Would the beer list hold up? Yes it did. A great list to choose from. So many options. Well curated and well developed. 👏👏 Would the chicken fingers be as absolutely epic as we remembered?!? 👏👏👏 YES. All the yes. Listen, if you haven’t had Blatt’s Chicken Fingers yet, you simply haven’t lived. Dare we say… best of Omaha?? 🐔

Up Next: Upon several recommendations, after dinner, we walked across the road to The Trap Room. You all had built up the hype and, we’re so happy to say, it lived up! We fell in love with the atmospheric vibes and the fantastic cocktail menu. The weather this fall had been consistently gorgeous, so we moved outdoors eventually and enjoyed the very charming patio. Service was also great. And have we mentioned how great the cocktails were? Truly a great place to land if you’re boppin’ around downtown.

This was a solid duo that we can’t help but 5⭐️

There are so many incredible places to eat in Omaha, it’s always so hard to choose where to go next! But these beauties are at the top of our Wish List. And we can’t help but have high expectations! So don’t mind us over here, just scheming away our next date night. 😏 It’s obviously going to be a good one. 👏

What’s on the top of your Wish List?! Which Omaha hot spots do we need to add??

On the Border + The Heights

Once upon a time, circa early 2000s, we were just kids falling in love. It was high school, and we had little resources. Our go-to restaurant choices were standup places like Applebee’s and Chili’s and every other place that offered sizzlin’ fajitas and free soda refills.

But our fav place of all was not even from Omaha. Or found in Nebraska. It was an urban legend that if stumbled upon on say, band tour or a youth group ski trip, we would pounce on like starving, feral creatures. So when Omaha - On The Border moved into town and invited us out, we couldn’t say no.

Dinner: Fun fact— It was everything we remembered and more. Still the iconic Tex-Mex style building, still the extensive menu, still fantastic service. We were instantly filled with nostalgia as we walked in. But as adults, we appreciated learning that OtB isn’t like most chains when it comes to the food they serve. They make a lot of their menu items in house, from scratch. Like their smoky refried beans, their handmade tortillas, the queso, the guac, the scrumptious salsa. 😱

We started with the Jalapeño Poppers which were actually spicy—a harder ask than you might expect. For entrees, the husband got the classic Steak and Shrimp Fajitas which delivered all the sizzle and seasoning. And I grabbed the Birria Queso Tacos which were straight 🔥. (The consume is another thing they make in house!) Then there were the drinks. The. Drinks. 👏👏👏 They were tart and refreshing and so big! All in all, we had an epic night out and can’t wait to go back.

Up Next: We love the look of the new Astro and surrounding town center. And we’ve been wanting to check it out for a bit. Since On the Border took us south, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to drive five minutes west to Heights Draft Room. Another winner! 🏆 The garage doors were open to a gorgeous September night (but there’s a screen to keep the bugs at bay. 🎉) and we enjoyed good beer and good cocktails and the lovely atmosphere of yet another up and coming nightlife hot spot for Omaha.

All in all, this date night gets 5⭐️ from us and we hope you check them both out!

Neighborhood Nightlife— Blackstone✨

“Where do you want to go tonight?” If you happen to be one half of a couple, you know (and hate) this question as much as we do. It’s not that we don’t want to go out. We just don’t want to be the ones making the plans. Why is narrowing down a restaurant so dang hard?? Why has it taken up hours of our life just trying to decide on something!? Anything! 😰

If you’re like us and struggle to pick an eatery, we can at least—hopefully— help you pick an area of town. Because more often than not, our go-to is Blackstone.

Blackstone is an ever evolving stretch of restaurants and bars that claim some of the best dining and drinking in the city. And when it comes to ice cream, Coneflower has put us on the national map. 🍦🎉 So even though we’ve had a few heartbreaks (Stirnella 😭 and now Meatball 😩) there is so much that keeps bringing us back. 👏

Where to eat?

Mula’s— Street tacos and fantastic drinks! Even their NA beverages are superb. Plus the ambiance… 😍

Nite Owl— One of our favs! So cool with a great Happy Hour. The unique cocktails are only rivaled by the eclectic (and delicious) menu.

Noli’s— This legendary NY style pizza lives up to the hype. It’s always a good idea to start or end the night with a slice.

Kamp— This food hall is fun and kitschy. From mouthwatering burgers to wild Korean corn dogs. Also a great bar *and* yard games?! Yes please! 🎉

The Committee Chophouse— If you’re feelin’ fancy, make some reservations and put your pinky in the air. This gorgeous, gourmet spot, tucked inside The Blackstone Hotel, will knock you (and your bank account’s 😉) socks off.

Where to drink?

Red Lion— This cozy, underground spot hovers around the top of our fav lists always. Great drinks, great atmosphere, great service.

Scriptown— Chill, low key, delicious. Omaha microbrews have really become something we should be proud of. And Scriptown is leading the way.

Sullivan’s— If you know us, you know we can’t make a list without a friendly neighborhood dive. We’ve been hitting this spot since college and we .

Crescent Moon— Another old timey fav! The food and atmosphere are worth the sticky floors and vintage style. Plus they always have a great beer list.

The Nest— Okay, fine, this was just an excuse to get Nite Owl on here twice. 😝

Where to Hang?

Wonderbowl— Mini bowling, outdoor movies, full bar, *and* food trucks?! Can.not.go.wrong.

Coneflower Creamery— Yes, the line down the block is worth it. Yes, the Butter Brickle will change your life. Yes, to Coneflower. Literally always, yes.

Reno’s Karaoke— Doesn’t everybody love singing off key at the top of their lungs to a room full of strangers?!
