In this heatwave, our alpacas have access to fans, shade and water, including watering their bellies. Larry, our farm MacGyver is training the girls to walk over the sprinkler by hanging their feeders nearby so they could water their own bellies.
Tawny, ever the water hog was first. And then one by one others joined them.
Then in true alpaca form, they roll in the dirt spot to finish cooling off.

Nicolosi, here. This is me, wearing my patriotic Stars and Stripes shirt (July 4th,2021) Just because I started out small, someone thought putting clothes on me, was a good idea. More about that later!

Alessandro here. I had some visitors today who fed me treats! Once they looked at the tuffs of hair coming out of my ears. I had them charmed. (I got my tuffs from my dad, Alexander.)

Hi Alessandro here.

Remember my wet belly?

Believe it or not, that’s one of the ways the folks here at Ponca Hills Alpacas help keep us cool on those really hot iNebraska days.

Even though we have shade and plenty of freshwater, when the temperatures climb, they spray water on our bellies because there’s much less fiber underneath us. That helps cool our bodies without soaking all of our beautiful fleece

And it feels pretty good too!

Meet Alessandro

Hi! I’m Alessandro, one of the greeters here at Ponca Hills Alpacas.
If you come into the girls’ barn, you might notice something right away—a sense of calm, when you look at me, like everything’s going to be okay. I would like to think it is my super power.

In this photo, I’ve just had my annual haircut, so you can really see my handsome rose-gray coloring and all my spots. You might also notice my belly looks a little wet—that’s because it’s a hot summer day, and the humans are helping keep us cool in the summer heat. I love having my belly watered.
I’ve learned that a calm presnce and a good look can go a long way. I like to welcome visitors in, make them feel at ease… and maybe gently encourage them to come over to my area first.
Because once you’re here, well… that’s when I can start working on earning a few peppermint treats before anyone else gets the chance.

Such a beautiful day today. 69 degrees at lunch time. So I let the girls out into a small pasture. Since Alessandro is in the pen next to them, he is highly concerned about where they are going!
