Why exactly do we swirl w**e all the time? Glad you asked... 🍷

𝗜𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗲. Oxygen allows aroma compounds to become more detectable and helps soften harsh tannins. You want to swirl most w**es, but older vintage pours are more delicate and thus might become overoxidized.

𝗜𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝗳-𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀. Some w**es contain sulfites, which can create odors of burnt matches or rotten eggs. Some swirling can dissipate those malodors.

𝗔 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹. By stretching the liquid across the glass, you can better analyze a w**e's color and viscosity. Swirling also leaves behind "legs" on the glass, which can glean insight into a w**e's level of alcohol.
