Silage season officially started for us last week. I ran into a little bit of a snag with an emergency surgery last Sunday morning, but the rest of the crew should hopefully have everything cut and packed by this coming Sunday night. We'll still be having our annual silo covering party (drinks and pizza included) for anyone who wants to roll plastic and throw tires. I'll let everybody know the day and time once everything else is wrapped up.

I haven't updated anyone on the ranch lately, so here it is! We finished the calving pens and barn the middle of April and they worked great! Sierra (our full time employee) had shoulder surgery in May and was out of commission for almost two months, then could only drive the feed truck for the first couple weeks after she returned. Max took up the slack during her recovery and did exceptionally well! He rode pens and doctored by himself most mornings, helped me move equipment during harvest, and fooled with a lot of manure in the afternoons. We purchased and built 9 more shade structures so every pen now has a place for the cattle to keep cool. We have plenty of projects still in the works, but this summer we checked quite a few off the list. Also, we are looking for someone to drive the feed truck on weekends. Max is spending a lot more time horseback lately. It has been really fun watching him become more and more comfortable riding pens and pulling cattle. He's even getting pretty handy at running the hydraulic chute and doctoring sick cattle.
