Our Story

We are Lucas and Paterka Town, owners and operators of the Root Cellar Farm! Our farm’s mission is to feed local families delicious, healthy vegetables in the most environmentally conscious way. The Root Cellar Farm is small-scale to ensure high-quality produce reaches customers while keeping community and earth in mind.

Lucas started farming in 2013 while attending The Evergreen State College. After enrolling in a cross-discipline business program that incorporated sustainable organic farming, he was hooked! Lucas absolutely loves “talking shop,” whether about tractors or transplanting and is the farm mastermind.

Paterka grew up on a horse farm in Washington state. She met Lucas while enrolled at The Evergreen State College for English and Visual Arts. Paterka loves all kinds of beasts, both carbon-based and carbureted, and is the farm marketing manager and graphic designer.

In 2018, the couple — engaged and in the throes of spring farm life — stumbled upon a defunct dairy farm for sale. Full of rusty potential, the 22-acre farm was quickly theirs. The two were itching to wrap up the season and move off rental land for good.
