Our honeybees were doing orientation flights yesterday afternoon. It's sort of like bee flight school for young workers as they prepare to become foragers. Around 20 days old, bees leave the hive and take short afternoon flights to memorize the appearance of their hive and set their internal compass to the sun. Here they are launching themselves backwards from the hive and flying in figure 8 patterns.
