This girl was always a hard keeper, but the secret to fat horses is pasture management. I fertilize my field in the spring, spray those annoying yellow flowers and the rest of the weeds, and have a dry lot to keep them up 12 hours at a time. Sure, it takes a little bit of work but the upfront cost is well worth it! I have had 4 horses on 4 acres of grass, and they eat grass year round. They cost me less in feed and hay, and live happy, healthy lives. We have been in a drought the last four summers, and my horses ate grass twice as long as those who had to feed hay 24/7 starting in the Fall.
