I saw this photo today with a lengthy post about how herbicides like roundup kill bees. This is not true. Herbicide (especially those available to the general public) sprayed on weeds don’t kill bees. Even sprayed directly on them. Many studies have been done on this. Especially different roundup formulations. Soap and water would be more deadly sprayed directly on bees. Insecticide will of course kill bees. Bees in the field are at the end of their life and often die while attempting to return to the hive. Tongue sticking out is no conclusive indication of what killed this bee it could be an insecticide but bees that starve or overheat also die with tongues out. Bees can easily starve in the field believe it or not. Don’t spray insecticides on blooming plants if you want to protect bees but roundup and 2-4D will not kill bees.

Sweet corn season is here and I’ve got a great tip for shucking corn that will have it cooked and ready to eat in just minutes! Cut about two rows of kernels off the bottom of the ear (right at the widest part of the corn ear). Microwave for 2-3 minutes depending on size and how you like it cooked. Once cool enough to touch or with a oven mitt, grab the end of the ear firmly so that you are holding the silks through the husk. Pull / shake the corn out of the husk. You’re all done no silks and corn ready for eating!!

Why should you have a swarm of bees removed if they will just “move on on their own”? While they will eventually move on, you don’t know where they will go. It could be into the walls or overhangs of your house or a neighbors house. Now you have to pay to have them removed or have allowed a possible problem to occur for your neighbor. If you see a swarm in a tree or on some other structure it is best to call a beekeeper to have them removed. LSU Ag Center has a list of Louisiana beekeepers by area. Most beekeepers will remove swarms for free if the bees are near the ground or for a small fee if they require a ladder to get to them. If you are within 30 miles of Opelousas, I’d be glad to come and get them for you and give them a proper home!

Chinese tallow “chicken tree” is an invasive species in the gulf south. While the USDA is releasing insects to irradicate it, beekeepers in the south depend on it for the largest honey production of the year. It blooms May through June in locations where it is prevalent. Let the tallow honey flow begin!!
