I am absolutely heartbroken at the news that Dolly Parton has passed away.

Last fall, my sister, some friends and I had tickets to see her during her Las Vegas residency. It was postponed, and then a few months ago, canceled. I was so disappointed, but always hoped there might be another chance someday.

Dolly was extraordinary—an extraordinary talent, an extraordinary humanitarian, and an absolute national treasure. There will simply never be another Dolly Parton.

It’s not often that the death of someone famous, someone I never personally knew, truly breaks my heart. But this one does.

Rest well, Dolly. You brought so much joy, kindness, laughter and music into this world. What a legacy you leave behind. ❤️

Shoulder + Farm Update 🌸

Today marks three weeks since shoulder surgery, and I had physical therapy this morning. They are extremely pleased with my progress! I haven’t needed any pain medication since the beginning of week two, and I’ve been faithful about doing my exercises at home every day and going to PT twice a week.

This morning they told me I’m way ahead of schedule. They were able to easily and painlessly get 140° of passive flexion in my right arm, and my therapist said he has no doubt I’ll regain my full range of motion. 🙌

He also had nothing but praise for Dr. Rory Farris, saying his shoulder patients consistently do exceptionally well and that he is truly a master at shoulders. So a big shout-out to Dr. Farris for taking such good care of me and doing such a great job! ❤️

Meanwhile, things are moving right along at Petaluma Gardens. The hoop house is completely cleaned out and ready for planting to begin in September and October. Field One is about 90% cleaned out and should be finished in the next day or two, and next weekend we will tackle Field Two.

And when I say “we,” I really mean Mike and Bo. 😂

They have worked their tails off, and I especially can’t say enough about Mike. He has given so much of his time and energy to keep my dream moving forward while I’m unable to be out there doing it myself. I’m incredibly blessed to have such a selfless husband who believes in this crazy flower-farm dream right along with me. ❤️. I was able to plant a couple of hundred seeds today! I will do what I can, when I can, without jeopardizing my recovery.

Three weeks down. Healing is going beautifully, the farm is getting ready for a new season, and I’m very grateful.

🌸 Spring 2027 starts next week. 🌸

The seeds are arriving from Johnny’s, and next week we’ll start planting the flowers that will eventually make their way to the field in October.

And I want you to picture something a little different when I say U-Pick flower field.

This won’t be your typical summer field of zinnias and sunflowers. We’re filling it with the flowers you’ve come to know and love from Petaluma Gardens — snapdragons, Sweet William, ranunculus, anemones, orlaya, clarkia and all those fancy, beautiful flowers that make spring so special. 🌷

There may be a few zinnias and sunflowers joining the party as we move toward late spring, but the heart of this field will be spring flowers.

Our goal is to become a spring destination farm — a place to come while the days are still cool and pleasant, before the heat and insects of summer settle in.

🌸 Wander through the flowers and cut your own bouquet.
🍓 Pick strawberries right from the field.
🌿 Spend a spring morning or afternoon on the farm.

We’re planning for the season to begin sometime in March and continue through around June 1, with different flowers coming into bloom as spring unfolds.

There’s a whole lot of work between a packet of seeds arriving in August and a field full of flowers in March — and it starts next week.

Flowers + strawberries + springtime at the farm. That’s what we’re building for 2027. 🌸🍓

Shoulder update:

I saw my surgeon this morning, and the repaired bicep has become detached. After talking through everything, we’ve decided not to go back in and reattach it.

The good news is that the rest of the shoulder repair looks good, and I am VERY happy that another surgery is not in my future! I’ll stay in the sling for another month and start physical therapy next week.

In the meantime, we’ll continue working to get our fields ready for planting our fall crops in October, and we’ll start planting seeds in the grow room next week. So while it may look a little quiet around Petaluma Gardens right now, there will be plenty happening behind the scenes as we get ready for the season ahead.

One week post-op shoulder update…

From the outside, things look like they’re healing pretty well, and I’m praying everything on the inside is doing the same. ❤️

I did have a little scare Friday night. I was simply trying to break a pain pill in half using my left hand and just the fingers sticking out of the sling on my right hand. It was such a small, insignificant movement that it never crossed my mind that I could possibly hurt anything. But I felt something pop in my shoulder, and since then my pain has definitely increased after it had been getting better.

So, I’m going back to see my surgeon in the morning to make sure all those freshly repaired parts are still where he left them. 😬 Hopefully he tells me everything is fine, I scared myself, and to go home and continue behaving. That is absolutely the answer I’m praying for!

I’ve now spent one solid week mostly sitting in this recliner, and as expected, I am about to go stir crazy. 😂 I knew this recovery was going to require patience, and I was prepared for that. I’m just really hoping tomorrow’s news doesn’t mean starting that recovery clock all over again.

For now, I’m not going to assume the worst. I’ll find out tomorrow what’s going on and go from there. A little prayer for good news would certainly be appreciated. ❤️🙏
