🐄 **Dairy Day is NEXT FRIDAY — and we need your help!**

Friday, September 18 is **Iowa Dairy Day at the Clay County Fair**, sponsored by Western Iowa Dairy Alliance.

We still have **about 80% of our volunteer spots to fill**, and we’d love to have you join us!

You **do not need to be a dairy farmer** or a dairy expert. We simply need people who are willing to spend a few hours at the fair, visit with fairgoers and help us share the story of dairy.

🐄🍦 **Dairy has a way of bringing people together.**

We were excited to provide dairy for an ice cream social at the **Moville JH/HS Rodeo**, which supports more than 100 student athletes in grades 5–12.

After the competition, contestants, families and supporters had the chance to grab some ice cream, relax and enjoy time together. We loved being able to play a small part in creating an opportunity for these young competitors and their families to connect beyond the arena.

Thank you to the Moville JH/HS Rodeo for letting WIDA be part of your event! We’re proud to support opportunities that bring young people, families and communities together. 💙

Silage is more than “cow food”—it’s one of the most important ingredients in a dairy cow’s diet. 🌽🐄

By harvesting and storing forage through fermentation, dairy farmers preserve nutritious feed that provides cows with the energy, fiber, and nutrients they need all year long. Healthy feed helps support healthy cows, and healthy cows produce wholesome milk.

Every load of silage represents months of planning, careful harvest timing, and a commitment to caring for both the land and the animals.

🐄 **Meet our Fall 2026 Intern!** 🐄

We’re excited to welcome, Ella Peterson to WIDA this semester! She’s from Lawton, IA, and is a Marketing major with a minor in Ag Business at Northwestern College in Orange City.

During her internship, she’ll be working on creating fun, accessible dairy education resources for K–12 students while also bringing her marketing knowledge and fresh ideas to WIDA.

Although she grew up around a feedlot of beef cattle, she’s excited to learn more about the dairy industry and help others better understand agriculture along the way!

A few fun facts about Ella:
🍦 Favorite dairy product: Ice cream — especially birthday cake flavor!
🐄 Agriculture background: Grew up around beef cattle
🎓 Marketing major + Ag Business minor
🏡 Future dream career: Residential & agricultural real estate

We’re excited to have her on board and can’t wait to see what she brings to WIDA this semester! 👏

This is for SILAGE! 👇🏼

Corn silage is made by chopping the whole corn plant—the stalk, leaves, cob and kernels—while the plant is still green and at the right moisture level.

🌽 Why chop it green?
Because the moisture is important for fermentation. Farmers are generally looking for around 65–70% moisture (depending on how the silage will be stored). Too wet or too dry can lead to problems with fermentation, spoilage and nutrient loss.

🐄 And this isn’t just “extra feed.”
Corn silage is a major part of many dairy cow diets, often making up around 30–40% (every farm is different!) of the diet on a dry-matter basis. It provides cows with energy and fiber that help support a healthy rumen and milk production.

So when you see the choppers rolling through a field of green corn… 🚜🌽

They aren’t harvesting it too early. They’re harvesting it for the cows.

It’s silage season! 🐄🌽
