Riggity Alps Homestead

Riggity Alps Homestead A chemical-free oasis with naturally-grown fruits and vegetables, old-fashioned maple syrup, and more

Being raised on a small farm, I learned at an early age that hard work was key to success. After many years of the property being taken out of any kind of production, we decided to start this homesteading adventure as a way to bring the family closer together. It started simply enough by attempting to produce maple syrup the old fashioned way: boiling over a wood fire. This was such a success that

the next step was to grow fruits and vegetables again. Without the use of chemical fertilizer or pesticides, I decided to produce nutritious food by first creating healthy soil in which to grow our crops. While we’re still building and expanding, expect to see unusual growing techniques tried here on the homestead, and if things don’t work out as expected, then it will be seen as a learning experience, not a failure. I hope you enjoy the adventure, here on Riggity Alps Homestead! As of October 31st, 2019, Riggity Alps Homestead has moved to a new location, where the adventure continues.

Another day, another turtle es**rt. Even on this dirt road, turtle fatalities are a reality. Take your time and watch for our shelled friends

Pollinators hard at work…and this is why we converted our front yard from lawn to flowers.

It’s turtle season out here! These little gals are busy laying eggs and having to cross roads to do it.

With the new garlic experiment started, we needed some hay/mulch to spread over the planted cloves…so our first mowing happened! We had some beautiful sunsets and sunrises in the past 24 hours, found a 4-leaf clover under a blueberry, mulched the garlics, and were graced by America’s symbol, just chilling in the swamp. What a life!

Our garlic is coming along, even with the cooler temps. We’re going to get hit with some heat till Wednesday, so I’m guessing that’ll push the scapes into forming. With the stored bulbs sprouting in the basement, we took an hour or so to plant them in the hugel to see what comes of them. Ideally we’ll have two harvests of garlic this year!

And Girlfriend’s garden is beginning to bloom. ❤️

We just went for a mile long walk down our very quiet road that has almost zero traffic, turned around, got a couple trash bags, and went back to pick up the trash we saw. This lack of respect for our environment is appalling.

This frost and ice is not a good sign for peaches this year…at least a few trees haven’t entered bud break yet and still appear to be dormant.
