With the way this girl loves on us and gives hugs - it makes me wonder if she knows we saved her. She was a tiny little kitten when she was found in the bottom of an empty dumpster that was delivered to our dump station. No clue how she got there or how long she had been in there. Thankful the worker heard her crying before people started throwing their trash in. We showed up shortly after and she asked us if we wanted her. She's grown up here and is one of the sweetest and best barn cats we have.

No chickens for this guy today. You can tell he was hungry by how mangy he looks. Based on where he was we're pretty sure he's the one that took one of our ducks last week and a chicken on Sunday. This is the 2nd one in 3 weeks.

A couple weeks ago we finally found our guinea fowl nest. If you own guineas, you know how wild and free they are and how impossible it sometimes seems to find these. We collected most of the eggs and left the rest to hopefully encourage them to keep laying. After a few more daily collections of freshly laid eggs we started up the incubator. Out of 25 total eggs, we have 20 that are thriving. Lockout is coming on October 7th and we're eager to see how many hatch. Because some of these eggs had been there for awhile, we could have a really long hatching. We only seem to find one nest a year and now they've already moved it to an unknown location but that's thanks to our turkeys(for a later story).

You either love or hate guineas. They are loud, obnoxious and stubborn but we absolutely love them. This year the foxes have prowled our chickens harder than ever. While we have lost a good amount of chickens, we have also saved many due to the guineas yelling. They have learned that if the birds start squawking we come running with a large bang following shortly after. Our guineas do their job well. We're hoping to make 2 or 3 separate flocks out of these guineas so we have the patrolling several areas at once.
