A little wine history on this 590th birthday of Riesling. Our Satori Springs Estate Vineyard is home to two Riesling hybrids, namely Ehrenfelser and Kerner. The first, a hybrid between Riesling and Knipperle, makes for a deft and flavorful wine and has been hugely popular in our tasting room. The latter, a hybrid between Riesling and Trollinger, shows more restraint, yet pairs well with the most elegant of white wine dishes. It is no surprise, then, that a blend of both, Ehrenfelser and Kerner, takes flavors, finesse and compatibility with either sipping or food pairing another step further. Cheers and “almost” Happy Spring!
Riesling-Geburtstag... Riesling, Germany's most important grape variety, celebrates its 590th birthday today, and Rheingau and Mosel have probably the longest Riesling tradition.
Documents from there date back to 1435 and 1465 respectively, with the word "Riesling" filed for the first time on 13 March 1435.
And 18th century Trulli are one of Rheinhessen's characteristic features.
On the left bank of the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate and largest of Germany's wine regions, Rheinhessen has a wine-growing tradition dating back thousands of years... to the days of the Roman occupation.
And it's home to the oldest documented vineyard site in Germany, the Niersteiner Glöck, with a deed of gift from 742 proving viticulture was practised on the Roter Hang back then. Today its 2.1 hectares, about 7 acres, are planted with organically cultivated Riesling and Pinot Noir vines.
