Altum Radix Farm

Altum Radix Farm Our quest to reconnect with nature, living with the land not just on it. It all started with a desire to live each day to its fullest. Enjoy the simple life, be self-sustaining, help our children to understand how things grow and where food comes from, grow an interesting crop, brew some beer, wrangle fancy chickens, observe the genius of honeybee colonies and enjoy their honey.

Slow down, breathe.

Farming... How hard can it be? Turns out, its pretty hard. And also very humbling. We have had a rough time this year with chickens. Over the last year we have had opossums slowly pick them off from the coop, no matter what we tried to do to protect them. 24 of our adult chickens were killed in very disturbing graphic ways. Not to be eaten just left to die.
That was tough.
After nearly throwing the towel in, we replenished this spring with 20 more baby chicks. On Friday night 19 of them were killed in one fell swoop. Again left where they fell. Monday night, despite my best efforts to protect the very last one, the last one was taken. Taken. As in the little jerks lifted up the nesting box door, crept in and took her.
These were our babies. Nature can be cruel sometimes and that is the circle of life, but knowing that doesn't make that bitter pill any easier to swallow. Such a silly thing, chickens. 44 chickens. I just feel completely defeated. And yet, I know we will start again.
Because that is what we do.
Breathe deep
and begin
again.

Hanging coir. One section down, 103 more to go. And to add to the weather and gusty wind awesomeness, the neighbor has picked this morning to spread manure. Yuck!

Couldn't resist picking a couple sprigs of lavender this morning. Our grandmothers would have tucked them in their apron pocket to breathe in throughout the day. Sounds pretty good to me!

Good news! Garden is planted!!! Then we went to hook up all the hoses for watering. Bad news. No water, anywhere, out in the field, in the house, the pump... Nothing. And, it is Sunday night. We know we must be on the right track if things aren't going well.

Doesn't look like much for this far away, but just planted all but one of those little strips of garden. The strips are just shy of 4000 square feet in total! I am tuckered out. Tomorrow I will finish the final strip and the big garden space for a grand total of about 7200 square feet! Fingers crossed for LOTS of veggies!

So, you want to be a hops farmer?...

First untangle 17 strands of 20 foot long coconut fiber coir from a bundle of 200. Then get your husband to climb a ladder and attach it to a wire 16 feet up in the air. Next untangle the rats nest of coir for at least an hour. Make up curse words as you go for fun! Finally in a 25 mph wind tie the coir to a low line just above the hop plants and train the bines to the coir. Voila! You have finished one section! Now go do 75 more.
