Digging out this bed of rock hard mostly clay soil is possibly the least fun thing I’ve done in a long time. The soil in these beds has been so hard the flowers struggle mightily to send out roots, and the soil drains very poorly so things do not thrive. I’m digging out all the native soil in these ten beds and replacing it with compost. I’m only half way done. But this hard work should mean much better yields next year. This has to be done by hand because the space is too small to get a machine in here and we have gopher wire in each bed. So it has to be done by hand.
