1161 head today. Futures continue to drop. They were down all week and cattle have been selling cheaper. They did bounce back today though and the market was better than I had expected. Yearlings were down $5-$15. Calves were steady to down $20 depending on size. No bred cows or pairs today. Cull cows felt a bit softer today after Trumps newest “Beef is too high” tweet but there were a few really high yielding animals that make the market look steady on paper.

4-500 # steers $3.50-$4.50. Heifers to $4.46
5-600 # steers $3.25-$4.50. Heifers to $4.20
6-700 # steers $3.00-$3.69. Heifers to $3.59
7-800 # steers $3.00-$3.49. Heifers to $3.37
8-900 # steers $2.75-$3.27. Heifers to $2.88
9-999 # steers $2.50-$3.03

High yield cows $1.65-$1.91
Low yield cows $1.20-$1.64
Bulls $1.45-$2.22

Market is definitely lower but the dollars per head are still awfully good for a cow/calf outfit. It felt good this morning though to see the futures trading higher. Hopefully we’ve found a bottom in the market.
Today was the last sale for the Lacque family and Orland Livestock. Grandpa Bo and Grandma Marie bought the yard in 1952. My dad’s first time auctioneering was when he was 11 years old. My mom has worked in the office since they were married. I started working here full time after college in 1994. Both my sisters have been here for the past 10-15 years. From the entire Lacque family I want to thank everyone for all of your support and trust over the past 75 years. We’ve made some truly special memories and friendships.
But we will be here next week. The new manager, Kyler, started working this week. Jake will be around every sale day going forward. Stop by and meet the new team. 1166 head today. Futures market continues to stumble. August feeder contract is now over $40 below its highs last spring. Market in the ring felt sluggish most of the day. Cull cows are still the only class of cattle still at their highs.
4-500 # steers $3.00-$4.85. Heifers to $4.40
5-600 # steers $3.00-$4.20. Heifers to $3.80
6-700 # steers $3.00-$3.65. Heifers to $3.48
7-800 # steers $2.75-$3.41. Heifers to $3.33
8-900 # steers $2.75-$3.33. Heifers to $3.19

Pairs $2500-$4200. Few
Bred cows $2200-$3500
High yield cows $1.70-$1.91
Low yield cows $1.20-$1.69
Bulls $1.50-$2.27

Well, even though we are definitely off our highs, cattle are still bringing a lot of dollars per head. All cattle today averaged $2193 a head.  just a few years ago we could only dream of those numbers. Hopefully the futures market can rebound in the next few weeks as we go into the fall run.

1893 head today. Good run of calves and yearlings. Futures market continues its yo-yo behavior but was down for the week. Market today felt fairly steady though with good buyer activity. No pairs today and just a few small bunches of bred cows. Cull cows remain strong.

5-600 # steers $3.50-$4.55. Heifers to $4.60
6-700 # steers $3.00-$4.19. Heifers to $3.72

It was sure a nice day to sell cattle after last week’s heat wave. It almost felt cold this morning. We will have a pretty good run of Bred Cows coming next week. Somewhere around 100 cows.

1226 head today. The futures market continues to slowly creep back up. Live cattle are creeping up with it. Feeder offerings today were similar to last week. Mostly mid weight calves with just a few light weights and yearlings. Market was up $5-$10. Nice run of bred cows and pairs. Market still strong. Cull cows continue to be extremely strong also.

That’s it for this week. Fall is almost here. It’s time to get that second round of vaccines in your calves. Make sure to get a respiratory vaccine in them. Just a shot of 8-way doesn’t cut it. And remember to tell me what you’ve given your calves when you bring them in to sell. The buyers always want to know what the cattle have been given.

Well, I’m sure by now most of you have heard the news. After 74 years, we have decided to “retire”. We have been so fortunate and blessed to have made so many good friends and customers over the years. We are confident the new owners, Jake Parnell and his family, will continue to operate Orland Livestock with the care and service you’ve experienced here. Jake has hired Kyler Radelfinger (in the picture with me. He’s the young one) to manage the day to day operations. I’ll be around for the next year or so to help Kyler with the transition. Kyler is a great guy. Smart, friendly, and eager. He’ll be starting here in the next couple weeks. We plan on completing the sale of the business by September 1st. Besides changing the name to Orland Livestock Auction Yard, not much else should change. We will continue to have small animal sales on Wednesday and cattle sales on Thursday. Mom will continue to be in the office with Leslie. My Sister Tara will still be running the cafe while my sister Rachelle will continue in the office and cafe. Dad will still be around with his firm handshake and warm smile. Mark will continue to lead our great crew out back running the sales.
Jake is a great businessman who cares deeply about the cattlemen and cattlewomen of our community. I think Orland Livestock has a lot of good years ahead of it. Thank you everyone for all of your support and friendship over the years. We are honored to have gained your trust and friendship.

1372 head today.  Pretty nice sale today. We had a few nice bunches of midweight, weaned calves,a few light cattle, and a few yearlings. Light and midweight cattle are still selling well. The big yearlings are definitely following the futures market down though. yearlings were $5-20 lower. We sold 275 bred cows and heifers. Cows sold well. Most were bred for October and November. Just a few pairs. Cull cows continue to sell extremely high.

This market has definitely slipped quite a bit. That being said, cattle still averaged over $2300 a head today. still a lot of dollars. Most people seem to think this market is going to rebound as we head into the fall. We will have to wait and see what happens. Next week I should have a pretty good run of Bred Cows again. We will have about 110 cows from Randy Moss out of the Klamath Falls area. Nice set of young black cows. Should be quite a few close-up cows in the Bunch.

Here’s the front end of the Holiday Ranch cows. Nice set of one iron cows. There will be about 225 total from Holiday. We will also have about 24 bred heifers from Jason McIntyre and another 30-40 bred cows from other consignors. Sale will start at 8:30. Bred cows around 9:30.

959 head sold today. Smaller sale with mostly 550-725 # weaned calves. Few light calves or yearlings. Lighter and midweight cattle felt stronger even after a crazy up and down week in the futures. Yearlings were steady. We didn’t have any bred cows. We had a couple pen lots of nice pairs that sold well. cull cows were mixed. Lower yield cows were a bit cheaper but high yield cows were steady.

4-500 # steers $3.50-$4.70. Heifers to $4.23
5-600 # steers $3.50-$4.42. Heifers to $3.70
6-700 # steers $3.20-$4.10. Heifers to $3.88
7-800 # steers $3.00-$3.84. Heifers to $3.20
8-900 # steers $2.85-$3.33. Heifers to $3.17

I think the feeder runs are going to be fairly small for the next four or five weeks until we get into the fall calves. We will have a big run of Bred Cows next week though. There will be around 250 cows from the Holiday Ranch. Watch her videos. We should have them sorted by Tuesday afternoon if everything goes right.
