The amount of love shown for Oliver “Professor GT” Batson during his funeral service was incredible. 🕊️❤️ One person after another stepped forward to share memories, stories, and heartfelt tributes, and hearing just how many lives he touched was overwhelming. The turnout and the words spoken made one thing very clear—Professor GT was deeply loved, respected, and appreciated by Orlando and the Caribbean community.

For decades, Professor GT helped shape the sound and culture of Central Florida’s Caribbean music scene. As a co-founder of Natural Mystic Soundsation (NMS), he helped create a name that became synonymous with reggae, dancehall, soca, chutney, hip-hop, and Caribbean entertainment. From sound-system culture to countless parties, community events, and celebrations, Professor GT wasn’t just behind the music—he was part of the movement that helped Caribbean culture grow and thrive in Orlando. 🎶🇬🇾🌴

Watching so many people come forward to honor him was a true testament to the legacy he leaves behind. You can measure a man’s impact by the people whose lives are different because he was here—and today, Orlando showed just how big Professor GT’s impact truly was.

Rest peacefully, Professor GT. 🙏🏽🕊️ Your voice may be silent and your set may be finished, but the music you helped create, the culture you represented, and the memories you gave this city will continue playing for generations. 🎧❤️

Today’s funeral service for Oliver “Professor GT” Batson was truly beautiful, powerful, and overwhelming in the best way. To see so many people take the time to stand up, speak his name, share their memories, tell their stories, and give heartfelt tributes showed just how much love and respect Orlando and the Caribbean community had for Professor GT. You could feel the impact he made through every person who spoke. This wasn’t simply saying goodbye to a DJ—it was celebrating a man who became part of the soundtrack and history of our community. ❤️🙏🏽

Professor GT’s contribution to the music scene goes back decades. Born in Guyana, raised in Brooklyn, and eventually making Orlando home, he helped co-found Natural Mystic Soundsation (NMS) with his brothers after moving to Orlando in the 1990s. NMS became a recognized force in Central Florida’s Caribbean music scene, known for bringing together crowds through reggae, dancehall, soca, chutney, hip-hop and Caribbean music from across the islands. More than 20 years ago, Orlando Weekly was already documenting Professor GT and NMS as an important part of Orlando’s sound-system culture, and his influence continued through countless events, radio appearances and generations of people who knew his name.

Today proved that Professor GT didn’t just play music—he helped build a musical community. Natural Mystic Soundsation continues today, carrying forward a legacy that he helped create, while his official remembrance recognizes that his legacy of music will continue through his family, NMS and the many lives he touched. Seeing the amount of people who came forward to honor him was a reminder that success isn’t only measured by awards or accomplishments—it is also measured by the lives you touched and the people who show up when your journey is complete.

🚨BIG ANNOUNCEMENT:
A new chapter is beginning for one of South Florida’s biggest Caribbean celebrations.

On Sunday, October 11, 2026, Miami Carnival’s signature Parade of Bands & Concert will take place at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill.

This move is about more than changing locations.
It brings Carnival Day into the heart of a community where Caribbean culture is already deeply rooted.
For generations, Lauderhill and the surrounding Broward communities have been home to Caribbean families, businesses, restaurants, churches, cricket, festivals, music and cultural organizations representing Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Haiti, Guyana, Barbados, The Bahamas and communities throughout the region.
That means the Carnival experience can extend beyond the stadium itself.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience Caribbean food, music, culture, vendors, flags and community surrounding the Parade of Bands and Concert, creating a fuller Carnival destination for longtime masqueraders and people experiencing Miami Carnival for the very first time.

Central Broward Park is already an important gathering place for the Caribbean diaspora, it is the home of Jouvert, so revellers are already familiar and it has hosted previous Miami Carnival programming. In 2026, the main Carnival Day celebration joins that history.
Miami Carnival is not simply moving an event to Broward County. It is bringing Carnival Day into a community where Caribbean culture already lives year-round. And on October 11, those roots will meet the road.
