Before there was Mae Tao & Son's Kitchen, there were just two kids growing up as Cambodian and Lao American, trying to navigate two different worlds at once. These photos remind us how far our families came to give us opportunities they never had. Like many Southeast Asian families, our parents came here carrying trauma, survival stories, and traditions they fought hard to hold onto while adapting to life in America.

Growing up wasn’t always easy. There were moments when our families were judged for their accents, their customs, and even for speaking Khmer and Lao in our homes. We remember school systems reprimanding our parents for not enforcing English, despite English not being their first language themselves. At times, it made us feel like parts of our culture had to be hidden just to fit in.

During AAPI Heritage Month, we especially reflect on how important representation is. Cambodian and Lao communities are often tucked away quietly throughout Central Florida and across the country, with many of our stories, foods, and experiences going unseen. Through our food, we hope to bring Cambodian and Lao flavors to people in an approachable way, educate others on our cultures, and create spaces where people feel connected through food and conversation.

Today, we had the privilege of participating in ACT's town hall meeting, where we spoke on issues that matter deeply to us, as Asian Americans, small business owners, and soon-to-be parents. It was an incredibly meaningful experience, and we’re grateful to have had our voices heard. See 2nd slide for the proclamation!

Your voice matters, too. Make sure you go out and vote!

July 2025 marked the beginning of Mae Tao & Sons Kitchen food truck, a dream my wife and I brought to life. We chose to be true to ourselves, even if that meant not everyone would like us. The journey wasn't easy – countless late nights prepping, my wife juggling her day job, and me scouring multiple markets for ingredients, often driving long distances. But every bit of hard work has paid off. Seeing fellow Lao and Khmer people proud of their heritage is a truly special experience. My motivation wasn't seeking gratitude; I wanted to pave the way for a brighter future for the next generation. Having been teased for my mother's cooking growing up, I knew I didn't want any child to face that. So, I took a leap of faith, driven by respect for our parents and culture, and in memory of my late father-in-law.
