A portion of the proceeds from Reid's Winery and Cider House Derby Day event at the farm in Orrtanna this Saturday, May 7th from 12-6 will go to benefit CANTER PA. Their mission statement : THE COMMUNICATION ALLIANCE TO NETWORK THOROUGHBRED EX-RACEHORSES (CANTER) PROVIDES RETIRING THOROUGHBRED RACEHORSES WITH OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEW CAREERS. CANTER is dedicated to providing new homes for Thoroughbred racehorses that are non-competitive or injured on the track, giving them opportunities to find new careers and new homes.
Nationally, more than 20,000 Thoroughbreds have transitioned through CANTER and are now competing in new careers.
CANTER provides a successful alternative for Thoroughbreds who must leave racing… most at a young age of 3 to 5. Many are excelling in new careers such as hunter-jumper, eventer, cross country, polo, in dressage and enjoying the pleasure of trail rides.

THE MARCH FULL MOON
~ THE ALGONQUINS CALLED IT the Worm Moon
~ BECAUSE about the time of this full moon the ground begins to thaw and the worms begin to come out of the ground, just at the time the robins return for Spring
~ IT's also known as the Sap Moon because it's when the sap of maple trees begins to run and maple trees are tapped to collect their wonderfully sweet sap for maple syrup.
~ THIS IS ALSO THE FULL MOON which determined when Easter would be in 2016.
~ Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon following the Spring Equinox.

Two forts were built in the Conococheague Settlement for protection during the French and Indian War and the Pontiac Rebellion. Built about 1755 by William Allison, Sr., Fort Allison was located at McCauley Spring, Antrim Township.

The new annual speaker series, “From Terror to Freedom,” commences Saturday, April 2, at 9:30 a.m. in the barn at Allison-Antrim Museum, 365 South Ridge Avenue, Greencastle, PA 17225. “From Terror to Freedom” is homage to the late William P. Conrad, Greencastle-Antrim historian, who wrote the book “From Terror to Freedom in the Cumberland Valley,” in 1976. Part I of the book detailed, “… the stories of settlers coming into the Cumberland Valley; their struggle for survival during the Indian Wars; and, the Valley’s role in the Revolution.” Part II contained biographical notes of, “…people (from Cumberland County) who played important leadership roles in the Revolution.”
