Everyone meet Marlboro! 🐮

He’s one of my favorites. I raised him as a bottle calf because his mom wasn’t producing enough milk for him, and today he’s absolutely huge!

Watching him grow from a tiny calf needing a bottle to the big guy he is now has been so rewarding. ā¤ļø

One of the questions we get asked the most is ā€œDo we use antibiotics?ā€

The answer is yes and here’s why.

Saturday was spent hauling our skid steer and portable chute out to one of our grazing leases to check on the progress of our calves and well a handful of them have pinkeye.

What is pinkeye? It’s a bacterial infection of the eye that is painful and highly contagious. If left untreated, it can cause permanent blindness.

When i think about one of my calves being in pain and going completely blind… the answer is easy, Im going to treat them with antibiotics.

There are other ways to prevent pinkeye, such as insecticide ear tags, vaccines, and pour on insecticides but those arent practices we want to integrate into our program.

So what do we do? We evaluate each calf on a case by case basis and only treat when necessary, under veterinary recommendations. We only use antibiotics and other life saving measures when an animal’s health and wellbeing truly depend on it.

At the end of the day, our responsibility is to provide the best care possible for our livestock, and sometimes that means stepping in to save one.

If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading. Hopefully this gives you a little insight into the thought and care that goes into every decision we make and what we believe is best for our livestock.ā¤ļø

We want to welcome Ember (white face), she is the newest girl to our herd. While she still has quite a bit of time to spend with her mom, I couldn’t wait to introduce her. She is very near and dear to my heart because not only is she my first baldie heifer but she was also a gift to me for my birthday. šŸŽ

This sweet girl comes from great genetics with her mom coming from a herd that we’ve had the privilege of purchasing calves from for 3 years in a row and her dad is a registered hereford bull with beautiful color and a great temperament.

I am so excited to watch this girl grow and she definitely holds a special place in my heart. ā¤ļø
