With the leaves beginning to change color, it's finally starting to feel like fall! Before you turn up the thermostat, take a few minutes to complete this Furnace Safety Checklist to keep your home and family safe.

Have a licensed HVAC technician inspect your furnace annually, replace the filter monthly, and keep combustible materials at least three feet away from your furnace and water heater. Clear outdoor vents of debris, and test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly, replacing units more than 10 years old.

We kicked off Fire Prevention Week by visiting Lourdes Pre-School to teach students about fire safety, answer their questions, and help them feel comfortable around firefighters in full gear. The students also had the chance to explore a fire truck and ambulance. Thank you, Lourdes Pre-School, for welcoming us!

The Oshkosh Fire Department would like to thank you for making safe charging habits part of your daily routine. Safe charging is an easy and important part of preventing fires at homes. By using the proper equipment, charging on appropriate surfaces, and recognizing signs of a failing battery, residents can help protect their families and property. We appreciate Amcor’s invitation to host our Station 14 crew for an appreciation meal yesterday. The gathering recognized the Oshkosh Fire Department’s past assistance and celebrated an outstanding workplace-safety milestone: the Amcor team has gone two years without a recordable lost-time accident.

Congratulations to the entire Amcor team on this achievement and its continued commitment to workplace safety. Thank you as well for your generosity and recognition of the Oshkosh Fire Department.

Always charge your device on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or floor. Beds, couches, and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat.

The Oshkosh Fire Department is joining the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) in recognizing Fire Prevention Week™, October 4–10, 2026. This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety™,” highlights practical ways residents can reduce fire risks when charging everyday devices. In the coming days, we will share recommendations for safely charging lithium-ion batteries found in everyday devices, including cell phones, laptops, scooters, and cordless tools.

Our firefighters train for a wide range of emergency situations. During low-rise training, crews practiced the skills needed to safely respond to incidents in apartment buildings, offices, and other multi-story structures, including hose deployment, search and rescue, stairwell operations, communication, and coordinated fire attack in a realistic environment.

National Fall Prevention Week is September 21–25, 2026.

Falls can be prevented with a few simple safety steps at home. When checking in on an older family member, friend, or neighbor, take a few minutes to help reduce common fall risks. Replace burnt-out lightbulbs, move frequently used kitchen items to lower shelves, and remove loose rugs, clutter, cords, and other tripping hazards from walkways. Make sure emergency numbers and the home address are easy to find, test smoke alarms regularly, and keep pathways to exits clear.
