This is not a post we wanted to make again so soon...

Yesterday was a hard day here at the farm.

One of our mares went down in the morning with a severe case of colic. Despite hours of intervention, unfortunately, she did not make it.

Cinder came to us needing a soft place to land. She was underweight, pregnant, and scared of everything. She had been severely mistreated right up to the day we put her in the trailer.

The world had not been kind to Cinder.

In the nearly three years we had her, she made leaps and bounds in learning to trust people again. Despite the mental scars she carried, Cinder had her first filly with us just two months after arriving.

Looking at her, you never would have known she was pregnant.

She got a year off and blossomed into the most beautiful, sturdy mare. She experienced love, care, and the time she needed to heal.

This year, she and Shiny Side Up welcomed the most amazing filly.

At just 10 years old:

Cinder began to trust again.

Cinder came to know nothing but love, patience, and understanding while she was with us.

And when she left us, she showed us just how much she had come to trust and love us, too.

We loved her, and she will be dearly missed. Her filly will miss her, and so will her herd.

Until we meet again, Cinder.

JOKER B - 1941 (RED DOG x BLUE VITRIOL)

Carl Miles Riding Joker B.

by Appaloosa Territory

In our breeding program at the Carl Miles Horse Ranches, we have strived to raise some race horses, halter horses, cutting horses, reining horses, etc. And I think we're achieving that program as you can see by some of the dozens of champions listed in Joker B footnotes on pages 8 and 9 of this catalog. They're all we've bred and raised. All of the horses horses that we've listed are sired by Joker B, a stallion that has won at it all. The difficult thing to do is find uniform mares that do it all to breed to Joker to raise uniform c**ts that can do it all.

Consequently, on most occasions, we have bred him to racing bloodlines or thoroughbred type mares to raise race horses. And we've bred to a few heavy muscled "stock type" Quarter mares to raise the cutting and arena horses. For instance, we've purchased top cutting mares, who didn't have any other particular qualities, to breed to Joker with hopes of raising ng a a winner at cutting. The same with racing, halter and other events.

The remarkable thing is that most of these horses did turn out to cut cattle as we had hoped, or to race, etc., yet they had good conformation, readily recognizable as Joker B's, and many have won in several events.

No we haven't done it all by ourselves, for practically all the Joker B c**t crops have been sold each year through our auctions as weanlings, yearlings and two year olds (for an average of $5.307 and many other breeders have joined us in raising and showing them. In fact, last year was the first year we did not show a string of Joker B's due to the complete dispersal of the Cee Bar Ranch when Mr. Fruehauf and I dissolved our partnership. Yet enough people did show them and won to the extent tha Extent that Joker B won the Premier Sire Award #1 from the Texas Appaloosa Horse Club in 1965.

As stated in our past sale catalog, we plan to continue our set breeding program, ram, we'll we'll be be back on the show circuit next year, and will expand our advertising. and publicity program a program that each individual that buys a horse in our sale can benefit from in the future as they've done in the past.

Then why sell the good ones? … because we don't think you'd come to our sale to buy culls, and we want you here sale day.

From the looks of the inquiries and requests for these catalogs, it seems that the offering of Joker B in this sale has caused quite a stir and possibly set a few to wondering. No, we haven't changed our thinking - 1 think he's the greatest stallion that ever lived and will always people think so. However due to my extensive travel throughout 17 states in the oil business, and being in Abilene only 3 or 4 days per month, I would like to see Joker have a good home, with good care and attention for his remaining years. He's in the best of health, still looks and acts like a year old like a 10 year old and should be good for several more seasons with the proper care. I would be happy to join in a syndicate to retain interest in him with 3 other breeders, or if an individual purchases him. 1 would like to maintain a quarter or half interest in him if the buyer so desired. If so, regardless of the purchase price, the buyer could deduct that interest from the purchase price and I would share the equal expense in his keep, etc., and of course pay board on mares that I send to breed to him.

So if you have any ideas you can count me in. Regardless, Joker B sells November 20. We hope you'll be present.

Sincerely, Carl Miles

Today was one of the hardest days of owning a horse. That is the day that you lay them to rest to greener pastures. Denver came to me not as a young horse but already in his senior years needing me to love him. He gave us so much love in return. Run free old man. I will miss you so much.💔

The girls are out doing some mowing for me today. Lawn mower is down so we're doing this the old fashioned way.

Thanks to Steven Hart for sending us this wonderful story and the photo to share.
.. This is a horse I rode in 1979 thru 1981. His name was Double Like Jo. He was one time Reserve National Appaloosa Reining Champ. He also was Reserve World Champion in Reining twice and once in Working Cow horse. He also made the finals in the several open events like the Nrha Championship at the Quarter horse Congress. This gelding one year won the Senior Reining at the Big three winter stock shows in Ft Worth, San Antonio and Houston in 1980. My name is Steve Hart and I was the owner and rider and at the time I lived in Tioga Texas.

Saturday Spotlight.
We just love this stallion from Appaloosas past generations. He's included in many of our pedigrees of our breeding horses and is what we believe makes them so colorful, so well put together, and have such great minds. Bright Eyes Brother
