In 2012, Homestead Farms started out as Breitner Farm, pursuing a more natural way of raising beef in response to our family’s food intolerances.

Knowing what goes into every product we eat is critical for Ken, who has Celiac’s disease. When he first started reacting, in his 20s, simple avoidance of key items was enough. As the years passed, more foods caused adverse effects, and even products labeled “gluten-free” could still cause a reaction. Either he was allergic to another ingredient, or perhaps there was some cross contamination during manufacturing. After years spent reading labels, finding places where gluten could hide and trying to identify other triggers (like MSG), we developed a new strategy: eat real food.

Raising our own animals allowed us to control what goes into the meat, giving us a higher quality product. Our garden already provided most of our produce, either consumed fresh or canned for year-round use, so beef was the next step.

Since then, we’ve been sharing our beef, chicken, pork and other products with friends and neighbors. We seek to be good stewards of our resources, find alternatives to traditional chemicals and be transparent in our operations. It’s better for us and for our families.

We embrace the seasons of Michigan and like being more in step with nature when it comes to working, living and eating.

Homestead Farms was born

In 2017 we joined with Melanie and Nick to start our own breeding operation and specialize in American Aberdeen Cattle. American Aberdeen cattle are a grass-fed breed that produces excellent taste, texture and tenderness. High quality and value make American Aberdeen beef a premier beef. Our cows are pasture raised, grass fed and grass finished, following natural and organic practices.

Grass Fed; Grass Finished

Here’s what you probably don’t know about the “Grass Fed” beef from the grocery store. The cattle are fed grass for most of their life, then before it’s time to go to market, they’re fed corn or grain to bulk up. They’re also not necessarily pasture raised either. Homestead Farms’ “Grass Fed, Grass Finished” cows are fed grass and hay throughout their entire lives.

USDA Inspected

In 2018 we passed the USDA’s inspection process which allows us to hold and sell meat in smaller quantities. This means you no longer have to purchase half a cow to get the quality of locally-raised beef. We look forward to offering 10 pound packages for your convenience.
