Introducing more farm friends! This little herd of Kunekune sisters rode up with Ice Cream Man last week from our friends at Foggy Fork Farm. Never thought we’d have a herd of piggies but we do and they are so fun!

Kunekune are much more my style of homestead animal, being more social and friendly. While this breed takes 12-24 months to reach ideal butchering weight, they are not food aggressive like fast growing the Duroc/York pigs that we used to clear a large garden plot two years ago. Those pigs ate 24/7 and had that classic pig stench. The Kunekune really don’t have that odor and I was told if they do stink, I’m overfeeding them.

These girls enjoy a small scoop of mini pig feed and hay along with goat milk, goat cheese, eggs, pumpkins and scraps from the kitchen each day. We don’t want them getting fat since they are slower growing.

Keep those pumpkins and gourds coming! The piggies LOVE them. We have a Pumpkin Drop spot at the entrance to our driveway. The piggies say thanks!! 🐽

Trying to wrap up breeding season before kidding season begins. So far, 5 of the 7 does that had CIRDs have been bred. One didn’t come into heat and one should tomorrow.

The turkey are now ready for Thanksgiving! We raised them on pasture with a very small amount of feed each day and this may be our best yield yet! Tom was huge, for a smaller broad breasted breed, coming in at 23.75lb!! The hens ranged from 12.75-14.5lb, a perfect weight!

There was a time when we planed to keep the tom and two hens, over winter them, and hope for fertilized eggs come spring, and then raise our own. It was a great plan until I walked into our local food pantry to donate a turkey and saw how many families they are feeding. The plan quickly changed to processing all of the turkey so we can share our blessings with families that may be struggling right now.

“Heavenly Father, thank you for the numerous blessings you have bestowed on our lives. We are grateful for the opportunity to wake up each morning and serve You. Please help us remember the many ways You have constantly provided for us, physically and spiritually. We could never repay You for the outpouring of Your grace and mercy, but let us remember how You’ve lavished us with love as we share our resources with others.”

❄️It’s that time of year again… the first snowfall was yesterday, pretty and insignificant but it was a good reminder that winter is coming.

We have more piggies coming tomorrow and so I set up a large area for the herd to get to know each other and for the new pigs to get to know me. This big pen is inside the larger lot that is inside the cedar grove where they will eventually have full access to.

One critical element is the heater that fits inside the water barrel that I made for our original pigs a couple of years ago. Pigs drink a lot of water and keeping it flowing is important for their overall health.

For those who have been following, these piggies will ride up with a very special new addition to our farm, whom will be introduced upon arrival 🤫

It’s come time to butcher the quail since Grace doesn’t want to tend to them in the winter, and I don’t blame her one bit. They are fun when they are laying their beautiful, speckled eggs but that’s about it for us.

We butchered 4 at dusk, not terrible job, went pretty quick once I got the first one done. It is, however, a lot of work for a very small meat yield. I prefer chicken!

Ona funny note, my husband asked, 100% seriously, “did you use the plucker?” And I almost died 😂🤦‍♀️😂
