Not only is Plant2026 happening…we’re also working in a winter cover crop of wheat🌾 Even though it won’t be harvested like a typical crop, it plays a really important role.
After the main crops are done for the season, the soil would normally sit bare through the winter. That leaves it exposed to wind, rain, and snow, which can carry away valuable topsoil🌬️🌧️By planting wheat as a cover crop, we’re essentially giving the soil a protective blanket. Its roots help hold everything in place, preventing erosion and keeping nutrients where they belong. But it doesn’t stop there.
When spring comes, that wheat is worked back into the soil instead of being harvested (what we’re doing now!). As it breaks down, it adds organic matter…think of it like natural compost🍂helping improve soil structure, water retention💧and overall fertility.
So even when it looks like nothing is growing out here during the colder months, there’s actually a lot happening beneath the surface. It’s all part of building healthier soil for future crops and taking care of the land long-term.🌎
