The pigs are loving their new pasture! We're about wrapped up on fall seeding, one more area to plant Triticale yet.

The farm has been keeping us busy! Tending to piglets, grinding feed, planting forage, doing tune ups and repairs on equipment, it never seems to end. Anyone else blown away it's October already? The summer went so fast!!

The pigs got to enjoy some extra snacks yesterday in the form of apple mash from our annual P***n Family C***r making day! Thank-you to everyone involved for your hard work turning apples into liquid gold and mash! The pigs sure did enjoy it! 😋

Operation Clean up! The pasture around the garden has been resting for months. There's at least 2-3 ft worth of forage for them here. We will let them in the garden in about a week or so to finish the clean up. Pigs are such great recyclers!

Another day of loading hogs! I let these guys stay on the radishes about 2 weeks and they killed it! Usually it takes the larger hogs to finish up the root vegetables but they really enjoyed it. Onto bigger and better pastures!

Things are coming together with winter prep! The training pen is planted, the tree line and back pastures are planted, most of the pumpkins harvested, and just a couple weeks left on the Butternuts. Happy Sunday!

Join us in the squash patch for an update. A lot of the Butternuts are ready and most of the Pumpkins too. If you notice in the background the pig huts in here, this garden is our other training pen. We had less piglets born during the summer this year so it freed up space for more gardens. Once everything is picked here, piglets will return and the cycle will continue.

Alec is getting this pen ready for the next round of piglets. Only one sow has farrowed but prepping the training pen takes at least a couple months. Between the tillage, planting, and a long rest period for thick growth. Last fall we planted Winter Peas here, late spring we planted a 6-row variety of Barley, and now this fall it will be Winter Triticale.

Bernadette had 9 piglets, she did lose one unfortunately. She is a Mangalitsa cross sow, we don't see high litter counts with these crosses. However, the Mangalitsa in our cross is what brings so much red color, rich flavor, and marbling to the meat. These crosses can take up to 10 months to finish in our pasture based system. But you can't rush perfection!

Finished moving the rest of the rascals with their buddies. They are loving the radishes. We've never had a group of young pigs eat the thick, fibrous forage this much. We're just glad they're happy and healthy!

We woke up to piglets this morning from our sow Bernadette, we will be sharing that with you guys soon!

Making progress on the next rotation. These little guys have been munching on all the radish tops, at this age they don't have strong enough teeth to eat huge root vegetables though. The next group of pigs to come through here will be older and should eat what is left behind. After that the rest of the residue left will be worked down to feed the soil.
