Garden 2025

03/22/2025

Things have been slow in the property lately. Short update on things. We decided to let our bees and pigs go to pursue other opportunities. What that might look like we are unsure of at this time. We plan to keep a small flock of chickens and possibly some meat birds throughout the year. Kat has a garden planned out and ready to however has a surgery scheduled that will take her out some of the season this year. Should be a pretty slow year for us overall.

We have a few too many roosters at the moment. I am looking to re-home the brown one and the white multi colored one. They are Easter Egger/ Ameraucana mix. Still pretty young and just started crowing a few weeks ago. Neither have been aggressive. PM for details

Sad news to report this morning as we had our first ever major predator attack. We were only able to recover 2 of over 20 chickens that were housed in our barn area. We have determined that the culprit is likely a raccoon since they managed to unlatch the door to gain access. We are currently discussing on what the rebuilding of our egg laying flocks might look like along with additional predator precautions to put in place.

Farm Update:
We have decided to slow things down and change direction on the chicken side of things. We had a ton of chickens!! I’m an effort to make things a little more manageable we have sold off our Easter Egger flock and are looking to let go of our Silkies. For now we plan just to keep our meat birds and regular egg layers. Future breeding plans are on hold at the moment.
We did add some Kune Kune pigs to the farm over the weekend. We have a young male and female. All of our research shows that these will be all around great pigs. They are known not to tear things up, don’t get super big and have a good temperament. Plus their meat and bacon is supposed to be really really good!
The bees have been really interesting. It’s been a lot of fun trying to read the frames to see what’s going on in the hive. We did find that we lost our queen and the hive made queen cells to replace her. The process to make a new queen and get her back to laying can take several weeks. We have been watching the hive closely to see if we see any signs of the new queen. Last week we did see a queen emerge from one of the cells. Now, we wait. Bee keeping has been super interesting so far. Really glad that we decided to have them on the farm.

Started building a new coop with some wood from a fallen down barn on the property. This will likely house our flock of silkies. To our surprise we have several new naturally hatched silkie chicks. Silkies are a smaller chicken breed. They lay a smaller egg but are super gentle and very docile. If you are interested in Silkie chicks reach out and let us know. We are currently hatching on more of a requested basis only and will be thinning out our flocks from time to time. Keep an eye out for chicks, roosters and laying hens for sale.

We apologize for not posting many updates lately. On the warmer days we have been out working on the property. Spring and Summer are always super busy.
What’s new with the chickens?
Currently we do have Easter Egger chicks and fertilized eggs on a regular basis. These are super popular since they lay different color eggs. They are a good layer as well as good meat breed. If you are looking don’t be afraid to reach out. We sell out fast!
What’s new with the bees?
We just added the second super to the bee hive so it is doing extremely well. They managed to fill the first super in about 2-3 weeks time. We just might be able to put a honey super on this year S well as possibly slip the hive. I will say, bees are just amazing to watch and have on the farm. We are really looking forward growing our hive into many hives in the future.
What’s new with the property/ future plans?
Of course many of you know we have already had nice enough weather to for the grass to grow. Mowing season is upon us!!! The property has had its initial haircut for the year. We are midway through adding a food plot to the back of the property to increase the deer and wildlife population. We already have a good deal of wildlife on our property. We hear Turkey on a daily basis at this point. It’s always a little startling when you are walking and hear the gobble gobble noises out of the blue. The amount of squirrel and rabbit out here is just unbelievable. We have also started the process of looking at what bringing pigs onto the property might look like. Nothing we intend to do large scale but could we raise pork for a few of you? Absolutely! If that’s something you might be interest in reach out to us as we navigate what that might look like.

Thank you all for you following our journey as well as your support and prayers!
