Doing our Best to keep these girls cool in this heat wave! Keeping them happy and comfortable is out top priority.
Did you know unlike horses for example cows do not have sweat glands. Cows body temp is 101.5 so cows are most happy between 35-70 degrees.
The most effective way to cool the cow is by increasing the air speed around her body and increase the evaporative cooling by wetting the cow or air around her. Fans constantly moving air at 2 to 5 mph and running misters systems are 25 to 30 degree cooler within 6to8 ft area.
Think about how it makes you feel when the fan is on or you walk by a mister system outside of a restaurant. This is the same concept we use to cool on the diary farm.
Once the water from the mister and the showers in the barn have served it purpose of cooling the animals. It will then be recycled and 100% of it will be used for the crops in the fields.
Today 1 gallon of milk uses 60% water, 90% less ground, and has a 63% smaller carbon footprint than it did in 1940.
