Where has the week gone!?!

This is the first week of the season where I can finally say that I am starting to feel the pressure. Between handing and harvesting orders, (slowly) answering emails, hosting you picks, working on getting the farm stand up and running, dealing with storm damage, harvesting in the rain, and trying to be a good husband and step dad, I am definitely feeling the pressure.

My intent was to be on here much more than I have been, but alas, I have failed at that once again.

I am using the opportunity of the rain this morning to offer a quick update on the new farm stand! We will be open through the rest of the season, offering a variety of dahlias, zinnias, sunflowers, and house plants.

Our hours are:

Friday 5pm to 7pm
Saturday 10am to 1pm
Sunday from 10am to 1pm

I am very proud of what we put together after many years of work on this stand. The feedback has been great so far!

Again, thank you all so much for your support. I hope to see you at the farm!

🎉 EXCITING NEWS 🎉

Tomorrow, for the first time EVER, our farm stand will be open for Dahlia season!!!

Guys, this has been years in the making. I have wanted to do this forever and I am so excited it is finally happening!

Here are the details:

The farmstand will be open tomorrow, from 10am to 1pm and will take place at the same time as our You Pick (there are still a handful of tickets left for that too).

The farmstand will have a variety of dahlias by the stem (just like the Rochester Farmer's Market), zinnias, sunflowers, mason jar arrangements, houseplants, succulents, shirts, and hoodies!

I am really proud of how it all came together. In the morning I plan to get a proper video and photos of everything before we open and it's loaded with flowers. Natalie thought I should probably post tonight so a few more of you have the chance to see the news!

Moving forward, starting Friday the 18th, the farm stand will be open Fridays from 5pm until 7:30pm and Saturdays from 10am until 1pm. Depending on how things go, we might have flowers available on Sundays too!

Thank you all for your support and I am so excited to be able to FINALLY offer you flowers from our farm right here on the farm.

A few of the flowers that were sent out this week!

This marks the first official week of the season. There were 100s more flowers than I even took pictures of that left the farm this week. We started out You Picks on Sunday and I had a full week of orders (that I harvested all by myself) that went out to a bunch of different customers. I dream, plan, and work all year for this moment. It is sad that it goes by so quickly.

I've written about that in the past. How fast it all goes, but how that also makes these flowers so much more special. If they were always here, we would take them for granted. The time we are without flowers, makes the time with them that much more special. It is a good metaphor for many things in life.

I'm doing my best keeping up with the emails, washing buckets (So. Many. Buckets.), harvesting, delivering, and making sure I visit the kiddos school for meet the teacher night. It is a whirlwind this time of the year. But I certainly do love it ❤️

How perfect is this zinnia I picked today? Dahlias will always be the winner in my book, but zinnias have really grown on me the last few years.

We planted around 6,000 zinnias on the farm this year, and they are currently in full bloom! We also have around an acre of dahlias that are exploding with flowers as well as a sea of ageratum, snap dragons, cosmos, rudebeckia, and sunflowers.

The farm hasn't looked this good in years, and it is just the beginning of the season. I haven't been this excited about our flowers in a long time.

We switched things up a bit this year and decided to have two You Picks each week. One on Wednesday evening for those that wanted flowers for a mid week pick me up, weekend plans, florists wanting to pick their own, and one on Sunday morning, for a relaxing weekend experience.

There are lots of tickets available for tomorrow and Sunday's event currently available. This past weekend people were full of smiles getting to experience the farm, and this is something unlike you are able to do anywhere else in the state. If you are interested, please check out the events page on our website for more details.

If you are one of the thousands that have been out to the farm before, please share your experience! I would love to hear about it from your perspective ❤️

A day in the life of a Flower Farmer.

My day started with an early morning trip to Menards to pick up supplies to fix the hole I made in the Farm Stand for an A/C unit.

Then I started picking around 700 stems for a couple of orders that were picked up today.

Updated the website with You Pick tickets for next Wednesday, August 19th from 6pm until Sundown. I might add more for this Sunday's, which is currently sold out, but I want to make sure the weather will cooperate first.

Then I picked some more and made arrangements for our friends at Wee Bean Coffee Co. ! We are going to partner with them and have flower arrangements available for purchase in the shop this season. If you are interested in grabbing some flowers and a coffee, go check them out! Amazing women owned Gen Z sisters run the shop btw. They're awesome!

And now I'm back at the farm in my truck putting together this reel. Why does content have to be in reels now 😮‍💨 I've spend over an hour on this thing 😭 I need to eat dinner. My day started before 7 and it is 8pm now as I'm typing 🙃

Oh well. Suppose that's the life of a flower farmer 😂

If you want more simple behind the scenes like this, let me know!

Everyone's favorite time of the year is FINALLY here! It is DAHLIA SEASON 🎉

The dahlias are looking better than they have in years, and with over 200 varieties of flowers growing in the fields, we’re really excited to get our You-Picks started again this year.

We’re changing things up a little bit this season. Instead of just one You-Pick each week, we’ll be opening the farm on Sunday mornings and again on Wednesday afternoons, starting this Sunday, August 16th, and running through the end of September.

Tickets for each You-Pick will go on sale one week before the event. This lets me take a look at the fields each week and make sure we don’t sell more tickets than the flowers can handle.

If you’d like to come out, walk the fields, and pick your own flowers, tickets for the first event are now live and all the details are available on our website at summerdreamsfarm.com/events

Hope to see you at the farm!

You all asked for some tips on stopping deer damage, so here you go!

The last couple of years I've been using a product called Trico Pro. I learned about it from some friends in the Christmas tree industry, and I've got to say, it's been working great for me.

A few years back deer caused $10s of thousands of damage to a variety of crops on the farm. This year, after I sprayed, I haven't seen a bit.

Trico Pro is distributed by Helena Agri-Enterprises in the USA. This isn't an ad, but if you all see this, I wouldn't say no to some free product 🤣🙏

I hate begging for support, but if you found this reel useful, please let me know in the comments, like, or share this post with a friend.

This took WAY longer to put together than I'd like to admit. I'd like to make more content like this, but if not enough people find it useful, I'm not sure how much more of this kind of thing I'll do.

Thank you all so much!

Following up a bit on yesterday's post about how long it should take for dahlias to sprout.

I mentioned that I always recommend waiting 6 weeks before stressing too much about if your dahlias are ok or not. Some of the factors that contribute to dahlia emergence include variety, soil temperature, planting depth, and quality of the tubers.

For example, one of the fastest to sprout (and bloom) that we grow is a variety called Linda's Baby. These tubers often pop up in around 10 days after going into the ground. One of the longest to sprout (and bloom) is a variety called Nicholas. Those often take a full 6 weeks before we see them emerge.

Soil temperature plays a big role too. Dahlia tubers stay dormant at temperatures below 50 degrees. When planting in the ground, if soil temps are less than 60 degrees, they might grow, but they will be very slow to do so. The best conditions for them to thrive are when your soil temperature is 60 degrees in the spring. Planting early won't get them to sprout earlier if soil temps aren't high enough.

Planting deeper can be helpful for having a more stable, less prone to flop over plant, but it also can delay sprout timing since the deeper you go, the cooler the soil temperature.

Weeker tubers that are exceptionally small (compared to the average size tuber of that variety) or shriveled might also take a bit longer to come up after planting.

For today's photos, I wanted to show you a bit of a time lapse of one of my Cafe au Lait rows in the field this year. These tubers were planted on May 15th. The first photo was taken on June 7th, the second on June 22, and the third on June 30th. At this point if the weather cooperates, these plants should be growing rapidly until they start blooming in August!
