This should have been dated April 22 but this evening when hubby and I got home from doing door dash we checked on the cows and unhooked the water...it still freezes overnight...We couldn't find Cupcake with the herd so we started a search, driving around the farm with the truck brights on. Finally found her over by the house and she had just cleaned off the prettiest little Guernsey bull calf. perfect markings, perfect size and healthy. mom and him started walking over to the shed where all the cows had to say hello to the little fella. I keep intending to get pictures but hasn't happened yet. Ill get one...

These mommas! This shows that humans are not in control. Mable was old when we got her and she skipped last year's calving, so naturally we thought she was too old to cycle....nope! Yesterday the temps was in the middle 20s and what happens?? A tiny Aberdeen x Guernsey bull calf. We have lovingly called him Meatloaf. He's perfectly fine. Mom had him cleaned up, dried off and nursing withing 30 minutes. She's a great mom. This is her 8th calf on our farm. Don't know much about her before she came here.

So we've had a racoon or two taking out chickens and turkeys at night. Full size turkeys roosting 6 feet up in the air being pulled off and ....I'm fed up with losing my birds so today I installed an automatic turkey size door. Hopefully they all are smart enough to go in when it gets dark. I have 1 turkey roosting on the top of the shipping container. I guess he might be safe enough. We shall see.
