We finished off our day in Indiana with a stop to see the Budweiser Clydesdales that are in downtown Evansville this weekend. They are so magnificent! The 10 beautiful geldings were eating Timothy hay. I asked and they basically get hay every two hours during the day and a larger amount at bedtime, when they are on the road. They get Timothy Hay alternated with Alfalfa Hay. The boys in the hitch are all between 6ft and 6.1”, and between 1800-2000 pounds each. That is a lot of horse power y’all. I always enjoy seeing the amazing Clydesdales and try to go see them when they are close to Paducah. I think I need one out in the donkey field with the donkeys. ❤️ The donkeys could get under one for shade and shelter. 🤣

The Red Girls and Dottie have almost shed out their winter coats. They are starting to look slicked out and beautiful. All 20 donkeys got brushed tonight. Kitty Wells, Shania Twain, LeAnn Rimes and Loretta Lynn still need a lot of brushing because they look a little like Chewbacca, but we are getting there!

Be on Alert. So far I believe it is contained in Texas, but states are putting out warnings.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has provided an important update on New World Screwworm which has been detected in a bovine in Zavala County, Texas. Read the full press release here: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/news/agency-announcements/usda-confirms-presence-new-world-screwworm-united-states

General information about New World Screwworm (NWS) can be found in the text below and in the attached infographic.

The adult screwworm fly is about the size of a common housefly (or slightly larger), with orange eyes, a metallic blue or green body, and three dark stripes along its back. It gets its name from the behavior of its larvae (maggots) as they burrow (screw) into the wound, feeding as they go. The maggots (larvae) cause extensive damage by tearing at the hosts’ tissue with sharp mouth hooks. The wound can quickly become enlarged and deeper as more maggots hatch and feed on living tissue.

Because they feed on live flesh, NWS maggots may burrow deep into wounds or openings, while other species of maggots may appear around the outer surface of the wound. In addition, even the smallest wounds have the potential to attract flies, so it is imperative that you keep a close eye on your animals for any signs of wounds.

Lastly, NWS infestations are a reportable disease! Immediately report any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations to a local accredited veterinarian, your State Animal Health Official, or a USDA veterinarian.

For more information, reference this resource from the U.S. Department of Agriculture: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/animals/animal-health/livestock-and-poultry-disease/stop-screwworm

My three yearling jennets, despite several wormings, are still holding onto their stubborn baby coat topped with their first winter coat. I have brushed and brushed all three until I have blisters on my hands. The birds are gonna have a hay day with all the hair I have brushed out. I got great pictures of LeAnn Rimes & June Carter Cash II, tonight. I will try to get great pics of Kitty Wells II tomorrow.
They are all stunning, but I’m super excited to eventually see what is underneath their thick coats - revealing their beautiful true summer coat colors. They are gorgeous, well built little tanks. ❤️🥰 I am very happy with our breeding program and how well put together these little girls are, born on Bell Meadows Farm. We are known for our spotted foals with great confirmation and my little yearlings are wonderful examples of the babies we are getting with our Brood Jennets and Herdsires.
