It is with great sadness that we report the peaceful passing of The Hustler. He became the main herd sire of Superior Stables in 2007. When we purchased a mare from Desert Jewels, she was bred to him. We said, “We will take her, but who is he?” Many still remember that photo of the stallion in front of the rock wall, with the wishbone on his left shoulder. Doug and I headed to England to visit Brian and Dierdre Cash. We were proud to be able to purchase The Hustler to represent our breeding program.
The embodiment of breed type and presence, The Hustler always took our breath away. He reliably stamped his get for many years and lives on in 10 members of our current herd. Desert Jewels Silver Fox is a well known Hustler son. We ended Hustler’s breeding career when we found out that he carried one copy of PSSM1. It never seemed to affect him, even as a gelded, riding horse.
Several years ago, we sold Hustler to our friend Julie, who has been enjoying him as her riding horse. She found him in the afternoon, eyes closed, looking like he was sleeping in the sun. I can picture him running through a green pasture, stopping to pose and then tossing his head in a circle, mane flying; a trait which has proven to be hereditary.
