We’re over our 48-hour mark without power. Alex made breakfast outside on the camp stove, again, I’m still listening to the same 20 Christmas songs on the weather radio, we both did the cold bucket of water wash up (because we can’t shower), and we had to skip a vet appointment because they don’t have power, either. And at least we can access our brook for water so we can keep flushing toilets. Alex has been running the generator for an hour every four hours (yes, overnight, too, the midnight and 5am wake ups are rough), so at least our fridge and freezer are still good. The woodstove is keeping us warm.
We were relieved and grateful to see the silhouette of the many 100-year old red pines that cover our camp point, still upright, after Monday’s sou’easter. A town nearby had winds of 72 mph. I’m sure we’ll discover blowdowns another day but for now, we’re grateful these trees have not been toppled like so many across Maine.
We prepared well (there’s always room for improvement, take notes now!), and we’ve been lucky to only be somewhat inconvenienced. Here’s hoping we all get power restored soon and that those displaced by flooding can return to their homes, quickly.
