Last night brought the first threat of frost- a farm’s worst nightmare! We irrigated the dahlias during the day and got huge fans to circulate the air at night. It worked! The dahlias have made it with very little damage. Woo hoo!!!

To keep the dahlias producing we are constantly deadheading the plants (popping off the old blooms). One of my favorite things is to see the bees collecting on the blooms. Four bees on one bloom was the record for today. I also made a bee bouquet with all the spent blooms and their little friends.

On Friday night the sky turned an eerie color and I feared for what would come next. Luckily the storm hit with almost no damage and the dahlias are still standing. Mother Nature can be a beast! She took out over half of my peony crop in the spring with a very late frost, so I was so worried she might end dahlia season early. Thank goodness she didn’t win this time. Sorry to anyone who is contending with her damage. I feel your pain!

Did you know that when you purchase flowers from a local farm that you are helping the environment and your local economy? Flowers grown locally don’t need to be flown in from another country, using all that fuel. Additionally, some flowers can’t be transported, because they don’t ship well, like the dahlia. So, just another reason to join us this season for a dahlia flower subscription! Support local! Go to deerfieldflowerfarm.com to purchase your very own four week subscription. You have until September 10th. We can’t wait to get our dahlias into your hands!!!😁
