Most people think of Colorado as just snowy peaks, but the Grand Valley is a hidden high-desert gem. Sitting at over 4,500 feet above sea level, our vineyards bask in intense, high-altitude sunlight you won’t find in lower-lying wine regions. This is the secret to our Malbec. At this elevation, the air is thinner and that means more intense UV rays reach our grapes. To protect themselves the berries grow thicker skins - that’s where all the deep, inky color, rich tannins, and concentrated flavor live. As the sun drops behind the plateaus, the thin desert air loses its heat almost instantly. These dramatic temperature swings lock in the grapes’ natural acidity giving our Malbec its elegant, fresh finish that balances all that bold fruit. It’s Colorado terroir at its most extreme and refined.

Raising a glass to the visionary behind Open Range Wines! 🍷 Congratulations to our founder, Mark Harvey, on his induction into the Aspen Hall of Fame. Since launching our first vintage in 2020, Mark has brought the same passion for the land to Open Range that he’s poured into everything he’s touched — from World Cup ski racing to authoring the NOLS Wilderness Guide to running his family’s cattle ranch in Old Snowmass, one of the last working ranches in the valley. A born-and-raised Aspen local and conservationist, Mark is living proof that the Open Range spirit runs deep. Cheers to you, Mark! 🥂

Look past the high mesas and deep into the heart of the Grand Valley, and you aren’t just seeing a high-altitude desert; you’re looking at the ghost of an ancient ocean. 80 million years ago, this entire region was submerged beneath the Western Interior Seaway. Today, our vines are literally rooted in that history, digging through the flaky, compressed layers of the Mancos Shale. As these vines reach into the seabed, they absorb a unique mineral character deposited millions of years ago. It’s this geology that provides the wine’s unparalleled structure—a profile that is complex, refined, and distinctly tied to the earth beneath Palisade. To sip is to experience the Grand Valley’s history, one layer of shale at a time.

From the sun-drenched Horse Heaven Hills to your table, our Open Range Malbec from Washington state brings the spirit of a high-country ranch to every glass. Malbec is uniquely prized for its structural intensity and “plum-like” richness, a profile that earned this specific 2021 bottling a stellar 92 points from Wine Enthusiast. While the grapes are grown in WA, this bold red is expertly crafted by Colorado-based vintners to pair perfectly with a wild game feast or a fireside sunset. Experience a complex profile of wood, earth, and fruit that captures the untamable essence of the West.

While you’re cozying up by the fire, our Grand Valley vines are doing some serious work of their own. Winter in the vineyard isn’t downtime—it’s when the foundation for next year’s vintage is built. As temperatures drop in Colorado’s high desert, our vines enter dormancy, channeling their energy into their roots and trunks, storing up the carbohydrates they’ll need to fuel spring growth. Our vineyard team is out there pruning, carefully selecting which canes will produce next season’s fruit. It’s meticulous work that requires both skill and vision—every cut shapes the quality of wine you’ll be enjoying.

There’s a quiet beauty to the vineyard, rows of bare vines standing stark against the Colorado landscape, resting and preparing for the season ahead. But trust us, there’s nothing sleepy about it. 🏔️🍷
