Most people drive through Bushnell, Florida without ever knowing they're passing one of the most pivotal moments in American history. 🌅 On December 28, 1835, a Seminole force led by Micanopy, Alligator, and Jumper ambushed a column of U.S. Army soldiers here in the pine flatwoods, killing 108 of 110 men and sparking the Second Seminole War: the longest and costliest Indian war in U.S. history. The Dade Battlefield State Historic Site preserves this sacred ground almost exactly as it looked that morning, with reconstructed log breastworks, interpretive markers, and miles of quiet trails through original longleaf pine flatwoods. 🌿 Walking these grounds at dawn, with the fog still hanging low and the pines casting long shadows, you feel the weight of what happened here in a way no textbook can capture.
