Did you know rabbits and horses have things in common? Although they differ greatly in size and appearance, rabbits and horses have similar digestive systems and teeth!

Rabbits and horses both depend on fiber like hay to keep the gut moving and prevent their teeth from overgrowing.

Although rabbits are often portrayed eating carrots, hay is the main component (80%) of their diet and should be unlimited. Carrots, on the other hand, should only be a rare treat.

Another thing people may not know about rabbits is they are very social and need plenty of space. Rabbits thrive when kept in bonded pairs.

People sometimes mistakenly think rabbits are simple to care for and make easy pets for children. However, as prey animals, rabbits are easily startled and many don’t like to be held. They are fragile and can be injured if handled incorrectly or dropped.

Rabbits require calm and patience to feel comfortable. Instead of picking them up, get to know them at their level where they feel safe, on the floor.

Rabbits are wonderful pets when their needs are met. Rabbits are incredibly smart, and every rabbit has a very distinct personality. What are your rabbits’s personality traits?

🐢 Slow down for wildlife!

One of our special neighbors right outside Critter Creek Ranch crossing the road this week 💚 Did you know gopher tortoises are a keystone species native to Florida? Their burrows provide shelter for more than 350 other species including frogs, snakes, rabbits, insects, and even burrowing owls!

Unfortunately, habitat loss and road traffic continue to threaten their population. Gopher tortoises are protected in Florida, so it’s important to:

• Drive carefully in areas where they live
• Never move them far from where they are found
• Do not disturb or block their burrows
• Leave them wild and allow them to continue their important role in nature

If you see one crossing the road and it is safe to help, always move them in the direction they were already heading.

We love sharing our environment with Florida’s native wildlife and using moments like these as educational opportunities 🐢🌿

“Did you know? 🐔

Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is one natural method some backyard chicken owners use to help manage external parasites like mites and lice. During the hotter months, we may use this method about once a month as part of our overall coop and flock management routine.

When using DE, safety is important:
• Always use food-grade DE only
• Avoid excessive dust exposure for both humans and animals
• Apply carefully and in well-ventilated areas
• Regular coop cleaning and flock checks are still essential

“Always consult with your veterinarian for the safest and most effective parasite prevention plan for your flock.”

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms — whether you’re raising children, bottle feeding babies, rescuing animals, caring for pets, or simply loving and nurturing those who depend on you 💕

Motherhood comes in many forms, and today we celebrate the patience, protection, sacrifice, and unconditional love that moms give every single day — both human and animal alike.

This sweet mama duck and her babies are a reminder that a mother’s instinct to protect, guide, and love is something truly special throughout all of nature 🦆💛

Wishing everyone a beautiful Mother’s Day filled with love, cuddles, happy memories, and maybe a few muddy footprints along the way 🐾🌷

Yesterday, our staff and volunteers had the opportunity to participate in CPR, AED, and fire extinguisher training thanks to Josh Jenkins with the Martin County Fire Rescue.

A huge thank you to Josh Jenkins, FLSE II, Community Risk Reduction Specialist and Fire Safety Inspector I, for taking the time to provide hands-on education and safety training to our team. These trainings are incredibly important in helping us maintain a safe environment for our staff, volunteers, visitors, and the animals that call Critter Creek home ❤️🐐🚒
