The annual vegetable growing season for our little Florida farm is officially over until fall. This time of year we're always busy in the kitchen trying to figure out the best ways to preserve our final cherished bits if food. With an abundance of onions, celery and carrots, the last few days have turned into mirepoix prep. Mirepoix is french term, but really just a lovely combination of chopped vegetables used as a base in so many delicious recipes. This week we've taken 2 parts onion, 1 part celery, 1 part carrot and sautéed them in a bit of organic olive oil. Once slightly tender, we divide the mix into 3 cup batches and freeze for later use. This season our Lila Lu Carrots from were one of our very favorites that never ceased to take our breath away with every slice!

Way-yelll, another season where our corn optimism didn't match our technical outcome! First fall crop froze, so 96 square feet devoted to the spring crop. Yes, "shake me, shake me, baby" sung and performed to help pollinate. Now here at the end of our season... we get to munch on a dozen funky mini ears! They are going to be extra tasty, right? Perhaps next season the corn gods will look kindly upon us once again. 🌽

We're enjoying our spring crop of beans while we can! This morning our harvest was Cupidon, French Gold and Scalzo. Our favorite way to prepare any variety is sautéed in organic olive oil and garlic until bright in color, add a splash of veggie broth, sea salt, fresh ground pepper, cover and steam for about 3 minutes, or until your desired tenderness.

You know the Florida growing season is winding down when we set the portable stove up in the pole barn and pull out the jumbo pot! This week our mission was to harvest a whole mess of collard greens before the bugs start chewing them up. Our favorite recipe is a nod to our former Season 2/3 gardeners Bev & Jeff, who taught us that liquored up collards, cooked for hours, are the very best.

The current draft of the Farm Bill hurts the ethical farmers who work to get us safe, nutritious food. And it’s bad news for human health and animal welfare.

So, who comes out on top in this legislation? Industrialized agribusiness.

The bill attempts to shield pesticide companies from lawsuits related to human health impacts. And it restricts the freedom of some state or local jurisdictions to maintain their own health standards.

The industrial food system would also benefit from the reasonable animal-welfare protections that were overwhelmingly approved by state voters. Laws that protect the ability of livestock animals to turn around, stand up, lie down, and fully extend their limbs would be revoked by this version of the Farm Bill.

The time to act is now. Use the Action below to ask your representatives to put human health first and reject handouts to Industrial Agriculture and pesticide companies! https://actionnetwork.org/letters/tell-congress-to-support-organic-farmers-with-a-strong-farm-bill-2/

Though we are no longer certified growers, we still strongly believe in and support the process, especially small farms with limited resources who are dedicated enough to be certified. Are there flaws within the USDA system? Absolutely. But with USDA Certified Organic farms, you at least know these basic guidelines are being met. Luckily for Martin County folks, there is one, authentic, USDA Certified Organic farm in Palm City that sells their farm grown food to the public, so check out Organic Oasis before this Florida growing season ends.
