One day is really all it takes to make you think, “How could I ever live any place else?” We’re all suckers for the summer.

One day we’re working in the city at corporate jobs, the next we’re walking a pack of goats through the Alaskan woods with our toddler. Wild.

Did I mention we’re staring a FARM STAND?

Coming soon to friends, Airbnb guests and all bread lovers in the valley! ✨

I can’t tell if this is helpful or completely obvious, but I thought I’d share.

When I first started baking sourdough, I was up to my ears in starter and jars because I would always empty out the starter and weigh it in a new vessel. It was a lot of dishes… Sorry, Ben.

Then I realized I could weigh the jar beforehand and subtract that weight from the total. But how to remember the number… a fancy permanent marker saves the day!

At this point, I remember the weight because I’ve written it down so many times, but I still do it for good measure. Could you write it down on a piece of paper and stick it to the fridge? Yea, but you can also just write it down on the bottom of the jar! 🙃

Anybody interested in more silly bread tips? I’ve got a few! Happy Friday!

Please don’t confuse this for complaining! I’m very blessed to have this life. But that doesn’t mean that it’s always romantic or easy. Many days are hard, most are exhausting, and all require a lot of patience with a toddler who has her own strong ideas and a list of chores that’s never ending.

There is most certainly whimsy and magic and so much beauty. But it’s not without effort and some struggles in the in-between.

We’ve moved so far from what sustains us.

It’s easy to disassociate from the process of how the food was grown/caught/processed when it’s laid on a styrofoam tray, wrapped in cellophane and stamped with a price tag. And sadly, that’s the real deciding factor these days. Can I afford it?

I wish I could afford to buy everything from local farmers. I’d love to stock my freezers with half of a homegrown cow. Unfortunately it’s more than we can comfortably spend. But you better believe every time I stand in the meat aisle, I feel a little queasy. What have they pumped into it? What carcinogens am I going to be eating for breakfast today? What horrors did this animal face before it arrived wrapped in a plastic bow?

This year, we’re focused on producing and harvesting as much as we can ourselves, not only from a health standpoint, but from an economic perspective, too. I want to fill my freezers, not empty my bank account.

We’ve been making all our snacks, breads, muffins, treats from ingredients in the kitchen. And it’s made a definitive difference in our monthly spending. (I need to make an update to our grocery budget video!) As the summer and fall progress, we’ll center our efforts on the garden, the rivers and the woods.

That’s one of the things I love about Alaska. It’s a land of plenty if you take the time to be a part of the process. We have to learn that process, and we’re excited to do so.

It was a lot of bread, but it was worth it! 🥖✨

Big shoutout to and their amazing craftsmanship!

We’ve been wanting to taste test the goat milk for a while, and the results are finally in!

While we’ve always heard that milk from nigerian dwarfs is some of the best, we found our taste buds much prefer the milk from the mini alpines.

Milk aside, how cute are these two?

I’m a few days late, but Dad finally has water!!!💧✨

We’re about three weeks behind here in Southcentral Alaska, after a really hard winter. We didn’t have much snow til January, so the ground had no insulation, leading to tons of frozen pipes throughout the valley.

A neighbor said the permafrost reached depths of 13 feet, where it’s normally only 7-8. It’s made the ground slow to thaw. We can’t dig deep for projects, can’t plant any trees, and in Dad’s case, can’t even wash the dishes. He’s been coming to our house to do that.

Why didn’t we call someone to thaw the pipes? Well, just watch the linked reel and you’ll see how that went last time.

But he’s up and running now! And grateful for every drop.

I opened the window to let in a kitty, and I was pleasantly surprised to find streaks of green dancing across the sky.

We wrapped Ellie in a blanket and ran outside to find a beautiful, unexpected show. The sky around us was pretty socked in, but there was a perfect opening for the lights to show off. A little blessing ✨💫
