Did you know nearly half of all Alaska farmers are women?

The United Nations named 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer to honor the role women play worldwide in food production and Alaska’s women farmers are no exception.

According to the USDA National Agriculture Census, 48% of all Alaska farmers are women the greatest percentage of women farmers in any U.S. state.

We would like to shout-out to all the women farmers and young 4-H girls learning to farm who inform and strengthen the Institute for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension (IANRE) at UAF. We wouldn’t be here without you, and we are proud to support you!

Watch for profiles of Alaska women farmers throughout 2026.

🐔 A Little More About Our Alaska Grown Chicken

We’ve seen a few questions about our chickens, so we wanted to share a little more about what goes into bringing these birds to your table.

Raising chickens in Alaska comes with real costs—from feed and care to processing. Our chickens currently stocked at Bushes Bunches Stand , come from one of our shareholders, Jamie Boring and Jen Jarvis with Sure Food Solutions, who raised approximately 160 birds. Because we are committed to sourcing as locally as possible, our supply is very limited.

There is also a cost to processing these birds right here in Alaska. We charge $10 per bird for processing, which helps support the employees, USDA-inspected operation, equipment, sanitation, utilities, refrigeration, insurance, and all of the other costs required to operate a small processing facility here in Alaska in order to get a chicken safely from the farm to your freezer.

We are developing our poultry-processing capability, and we are learning what it actually takes to raise, process, and sell an Alaskan chicken from beginning to end. That is what makes this exciting. If we want more Alaska-grown food, somebody has to raise it, somebody has to process it, somebody has to sell it, and Alaskans have to be willing to buy it. We are trying to help build each piece of that chain.

For a chicken to be labeled Alaska Grown, it must live in Alaska for at least 51% of its life. We cannot label a bird Alaska Grown unless that requirement has been met.

We know Alaska Grown products can sometimes cost more, but that price helps support the farmer who raised the animal, the people who processed it, and the local businesses working to keep food production right here in Alaska.

And if you have questions about the chickens themselves, Jamie would be more than happy to talk chicken! 🐔 He put a lot of time and work into raising these birds, and we’re proud to be able to offer them to our customers.

Thank you for supporting Alaska farmers, Alaska businesses, and locally grown food! ❤️
