Hidden Springs Family Farm

Hidden Springs Family Farm Hidden Springs Family Farm is your local source for naturally grown produce, and pasture-raised poultry and lamb Army.

Hidden Springs Family Farm is a naturally grown (no pesticides, no herbicides, no synthetic fertilizers) pasture-based farm. Barbara and Dewey began actively farming in 2022 along with their family and plan to steadily grow and diversify its offerings. Hidden Springs raises animals ethically with regenerative/sustainable practices and in harmony with nature. We currently offer pasture-raised eggs

for sale at the farm store and at the Fluvanna Farmer's Market. Summer 2022 they will have produce and pasture-raised poultry available. We plan to add bees for honey and perennial flowers, produce, and fruit to the farm throughout 2022. These enterprises will take a few years before they are ready for the community, but we are excited to share the journey with you as the farm continues to develop and diversify our offerings. The Farm’s mission is to grow holistic food and flowers using regenerative farming methods in order to rehabilitate the soil. Barbara and Dewey Haines met in 2006 while deployed to Kuwait with the U.S. Their love of good food and desire to work together doing something they love led them to farming. Since retiring from the Army, they relocated with their family to Palmyra, VA where they are building a small family farm to provide healthier / more nutritious food (better tasting without additives) produced using natural and regenerative methods. Barbara and Dewey enjoy engaging with customers and fellow farmers to exchange information on their growing methods and what they have learned.

Sheep - The Sheep are all Moved to the Corral Area in Preparation for Sheering this Afternoon. Yesterday afternoon we moved the Ewe and Lamb flock into and through the west corral into the east corral since it has more cover for them to get out of the sun...that was the easier part. Then we moved the three male sheep from the bend in the driveway, and down the driveway toward the corral. Dewey led the way with an alfalfa bucket and I trailed behind with the Shepherd's crook. Once at the corral entrance the boys didn't want to go through the gate. It took a little coaxing, but they finally went into the corral.

We ensured there was supplemental hay for both groups and filled both water troughs with fresh water.

This afternoon the shearer will be here around 3 pm to help them shed their wool coats for the summer. Stay tuned for updated pictures.

Check back to see what they look like shorn.

Vegetable - Hoop House Tomatoes. This winter was a learning experience as we worked to figure out how to grow in our hoop house. This included taking two zoom classes on growing in hoop houses. Based on what we learned, those we talked to, and podcasts we listened to, Barbara started two types of tomatoes that are supposed to grow better in high tunnels. One is a small paste tomato (think small roma) and the other is a larger snacking (think large cherry) tomato. One of our early concerns was with pollination. We noticed that the hoop house doesn't get as many bees and other pollinators. Fortunately, tomatoes can wind pollinate (not as good as when pollinators help out).

Even with concerns about pollination, it looks like they are doing well. We think we will have some tomatoes available in about one more week on Farm and at the Fluvanna Farmer's Market. We are just waiting for them to change color now so stay tuned.

Sheep - Overall the Flock is Doing Great...one Ewe is Struggling. For the past week we have been treating a Ewe that has had a temperature, shaky legs, and low energy. However, it is great to see how she takes care of her lamb. Yesterday she laid down after walking from one side of the paddock to the other (tired). Then her lamb came to her and she struggled to stand up so her lamb could feed (it was great to see...tear jerking). We (and the veterinarian) are still struggling to understand what is wrong with her. We have been treating her like she has an infection, while also removing a number of engorged ticks from her. Yesterday, after consultation with our vet, we switched to a different treatment method and hope this morning she will be doing better.

The next big event for the sheep is wool shearing on Friday afternoon. We have to move them on Thursday over to the corral and run-in-shed. While they are in the corral we also plan to do a health check and vaccinate the lambs.

Stay tuned for updates.

Vegetables - Garlic Scape (Seasonal Delicacy). The above ground leaves of this seasons garlic looks good. We have concerns about how the heads/cloves will look based on the up and down temperatures we have had this season so far. Similar to last year with the warmer weather the hardneck garlic already has well established scapes. The scapes (stems and flowers) of the garlic plant have to be harvested so the plant will focus its energy on the bulb instead of flowering and spreading seed. So far Barbara has harvested over 4 lbs of garlic scapes. Garlic scapes make a stellar addition to pesto, soups, stir-fries, and more.

Garlic scapes are the green stalks that extend from the base of hard-neck garlic plants, resembling oversized chives or scallions. They’re related to but different from green garlic (the bulbs and shoots of garlic plants that haven’t fully matured). A quick google search will give you many recipes on how to use them or substitute them in your cooking for a new take on a dish you already make or just something new. We traditionally use some to make a Garlic Scape and Steak stir-fry.

Want to try some out; stop by the farm store or farmer’s Market and pick some up. We will only have them for 1-2 weeks

On-Pasture Chicken (Layers) - Showing their Feathers. Our replacement egg laying chickens reached 12 weeks last Wednesday and we are starting to identify any roosters that we might have arrived with this year's order. We can typically identify them in three ways: their comb and waddle; their neck feathers; and their tail feathers. As you can see in the photos, the ones circled in red are likely roosters. They have much larger and redder combs and waddles than the females. For neck feathers, roosters have long, pointed, and flowing feathers. In contrast, hens have much shorter, blunter, and rounded neck feathers. Finally, tail feathers, roosters develop saddle feathers and long, curved, and flowing "sickle" feathers, whereas hens have shorter, straighter, and more uniform tails.

When we order layers each year, we order all females (you can order a straight run that gives you a mix for those that want both male and female chickens). However, every hatchery lets you know they do the best they can to s*x them but all have a 90% guarantee. Well this year, it looks like they were 94% right....we think we have 4 rooster (three circled in red in one photo) in our flock of 70.

About 12 more weeks before they start laying and we can mix them in with the larger flock.
