While inspecting the hives last weekend we realized that one of them did not appear to have a queen. What likely happened is that after they swarmed, the new queen hatched and went out for her mating flight and never made it back. So, as you do, I went to the bee store and bought a queen. I wasn’t sure how they would take to her, but I was thrilled to see them so excited! If they didn’t like her, or if they did have a queen but I hadn’t seen her, they would have been sticking their butts at her trying to sting her. Instead, you can see them already sticking their tongues out trying to groom her and feed her. Over the next day or two, they’ll work on removing the candy plug to free her from the cage, and she’ll start her reign!

Welp. We’ll be back up and running with eggs and honey tomorrow, once the Freon gets a chance to settle back down and the stand is vertical again. 😬

Today I got a call from a homeowner who was outside gardening when a swarm of bees crossed through her yard and settled on a tree. I was very excited both to try Swarm Commander (a spray that is lemongrass scented to mimic the natural swarm pheromone) and to have the help of a dear friend and new beekeeper. It went beautifully, and the new girls seem very happy in their new home.

Usually, mowing near the bees isn’t a problem, and they mind their business and we mind our business and we all go about our day. Today, Matt was mowing some weeds down there, and he was getting pinged by guard bees. Then one stung him on the chest. He sped out of there, and we suited up to investigate, and found this! A super small swarm! It seems like they’ve been having a hard time finding a new home, because they began building comb in the tree! Swarms usually aren’t defensive, but these ladies had built a modest home they were protecting. We moved them into a swarm box, and hopefully as the foragers come home for the night, they’ll make themselves comfy and stick around!

This week I had the honor of visiting our local primary school (where I attempted a swarm capture last week) to talk to some classes (both in person and remote!) about honeybees and how a swarm of them ended up on their playground. The children asked so many thoughtful questions and this bee nerd was so happy to have interested ears while I got to talk about bees!
