Dr. Bill Loo, MD, PhD, describes the philosophy behind the years-long effort to bring compact proton therapy to Stanford.

We are thrilled to see our department’s hard work featured in The Mercury News today, featuring Dr. Susan Hiniker, MD, and Dr. Loo! Space on a busy medical campus is always at a premium, which historically made massive, multi-story proton systems impossible to install. By embracing a compact, single-room particle accelerator, our team successfully converted an existing treatment vault to bring this precise, tissue-sparing technology directly to patients in need.

Clinical innovation meets life-changing patient care! Our department was recently spotlighted by People Magazine following the successful treatment of our first patient in the world’s most compact proton therapy suite.

For pediatric patients with tumors located near critical structures like the brain stem, precision is everything. This technology allows our team to minimize long-term side effects by protecting surrounding healthy tissue.

We are incredibly proud of our team for their commitment to redefining what is possible in cancer treatment, and we are cheering on our brave first patient as he completes his care.

We are excited to announce that Everett Moding, MD, PhD, has been elected as the Councilor of Medicine for the Radiation Research Society! In this role, Dr. Moding will help shape the direction of the radiation research community nationwide. Congratulations on this exceptional achievement!

On June 4, a 7-year-old boy who had a rare, malignant brain tumor removed became the first person treated at Stanford Medicine’s new, ultracompact proton therapy facility.

The milestone arrived near the end of patient Stephen De La Torre’s planned radiotherapy treatments; his doctors expect to send him home next week to resume life as a normal, active kid. But Stephen’s treatment is just the start of making a highly effective cancer therapy much more accessible to patients in Northern California and, eventually, around the world.

We are incredibly proud of our team, whose vision made this possible!

Congratulations to Nataliya Kovalchuk, PhD, Clinical Professor of Radiation Oncology, for being named the 2027 Honorary Member of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO)! ESTRO is one of the highest distinctions awarded by the society. This award recognized Dr. Kovalchuk’s work with the Help Ukraine Group - HUG in supporting radiation therapy in Ukraine. The honorary membership designation was announced during ESTRO 2026 Congress in Stockholm and will be presented during ESTRO 2027 Congress in Milan.

Meet one tough 7-year-old fighter at Stanford Radiation Oncology!

While going through 6 weeks of daily radiation therapy for a brain tumor, Angelo channels the fighting spirit of his hero, Nick Bosa, of the San Francisco 49ers. His special Bosa-inspired #97 mask and jersey make him feel warrior-ready for each treatment. Every treatment takes bravery, strength, and heart, and he shows all three every single day. Also like Bosa, he has a gift for entertaining a crowd!
