Muscari, better known as Grape Hyacinth, might be one of the easiest ways to add early spring color to your garden. 🌸

Each cluster of tiny, bell-shaped flowers really does resemble an upside-down bunch of grapes, and they come up in March and April, right when you need a little life back in the garden after winter. Both varieties are fragrant, deer resistant, and naturalize easily, meaning they multiply and come back stronger every year. They stay compact at 6 to 8 inches tall, so they work beautifully in borders, rock gardens, containers, or tucked in with tulips and daffodils.

Fritillaria is one of the most unique bulbs you can add to a spring garden. 🌸

This genus covers everything from the tiny, checkered Fritillaria meleagris with its snake's head pattern to the tall, dramatic Fritillaria imperialis with its crown of bell-shaped blooms. No two varieties look alike, and that is part of the fun of growing them. They do well in full sun or partial shade, and most are deer and rodent resistant, which is always a bonus.

Hardy cyclamen brings color when nothing else in the garden will.

Cyclamen coum is one of the earliest bloomers, sending up small pink flowers from late winter into early spring, right when you need it most. The patterned leaves alone are worth growing, and it does great tucked under trees, along shaded paths, or in containers by the front door.

Also called Harlequin Flower, this mix blooms in orange, red, white, yellow, and copper, often with a dark center that makes every flower stand out. The narrow foliage and arching stems grow 10 to 14 inches tall, making Sparaxis a great fit for pots, mixed borders, or cutting gardens.

Plant these bulbs in full sun to partial shade, then enjoy a fresh burst of color in May.

Siberian iris is one of those plants that just gets better every year. 🌿

From a single mother clump you can grow into sweeping drifts, these sturdy perennials send up elegant blooms in April on 26 to 30 inch stems, then keep their bronze-tinged foliage looking good well into winter. They are hardy in zones 3 to 9, happy in normal garden beds or moist spots, and do well in full sun with average moisture.

We offer Siberian iris both as individual plants and as larger mother clumps, so you can choose whether you want to fill a bed fast or build it up over time.

Make it a habit: the 10-minute garden check. 🔍

Once a week, take ten minutes to walk your garden. Flip a few leaves, look over new growth, and check around the base of your plants. In our Eastern NC heat and humidity, small pest or disease problems can spread fast if you miss them. Sticky, curled leaves, tiny yellow speckles, white powdery patches, or chewed edges are all early warning signs that something is moving in.

Catching one problem leaf now is a lot easier than trying to save a whole bed later. Ten minutes today can save you hours of cleanup down the road. 🌿

Late-summer surprise: it is Rain Lily season. 🌧️🌸

If you have ever seen little blooms pop up almost overnight after a summer shower, you have probably met a Rain Lily. These small bulbs often sit quietly through the heat, then a good soaking rain or deep watering triggers a fresh flush of flowers for several weeks. Pink Zephyranthes rosea and soft yellow Zephyranthes primulina are some of our favorites for July and August here in North Carolina.

Do not assume they are failing when they look sleepy in dry weather. Rain Lilies are just waiting for their cue. Plant them in well-drained soil with sun to partial shade, give established clumps a deep drink when rain has been scarce, and watch for their next surprise.
