What's so great about grass?

Grass is the original, most natural, most organic source of bovine nourishment that has ever been known. The cow’s (all ruminants) digestive system is different from others. There are four “stomachs”. The first one is where the grass goes to begin to ferment after it is initially ingested. Given her own choices, a cow will spend about one third of her time eating grass, one third of her time “chewing her cud”, and one third of her time just being idle. A cow chewing her cud is a picture of contentment. The cud is the grass that she has swallowed earlier and then brought back up to chew on, only to swallow it again into another stomach, so that by the time it has passed through all four stomachs it is fully digested and all of its nutrients have been fully utilized.

Aren't All Cattle Grass Fed? Yes and No.

Mama cows with their babies often live in grass environments but many of them are fed supplemental grain. And, most beef landing on dinner plates comes from cattle kept in huge confinement systems and fed only grain while they live in dust and dirt. The catch words that define beef from Simply Grassfed are “grass finished”.

Who Cares?

Anyone who cares about the welfare of cattle will care about how they are kept. The outdoors with abundant sunshine, shade on hot days, rain to make the grass grow and to clean the cows, and grass to eat and lounge in are a lovely environment for cattle. And when the farmer manages his cows and pastures correctly, the earth beneath the grass benefits so that it provides healthier food for cows, the grass grows more healthy, the cows who eat it are healthy and happy, and beef from healthy and happy cattle leads to healthy and happy people.

The Human Benefits of Grass Fed and Finished Beef

Grass finished is a designation for cattle that eat only grass their entire lives; an important distinction. The benefits to humans whose diets include grass fed/finished beef are as follows:

✔️it has more nutritional value per ounce
✔️it contains ample amounts of essential minerals
✔️it contains significantly higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids
✔️it contains higher levels of Conjugated Linoleic Acids (CLAs) lowering the risk of heart disease and cancers
✔️the risks of food poisoning are lower since the cattle are kept in natural environments

Contrary to conventional wisdom with regard to grass vs. grain finished beef, the pleasant taste and texture of grass-fed rivals or exceeds that of grain fed, especially when it is dry aged as is the case with the beef from Simply Grassfed.

Processors clean meats typically with Chlorine or Citric Acid. All our fresh beef cuts have been cleaned with Apple Cider Vinegar. Our processed products to include beef sticks, jerky, bologna, hot dogs, bone broth, beef sausages, and beef bacon have be cleaned with Lactic Acid.

We loaded the final bales of hay into the barn and feel good about the stockpile as the leaves begin turning red and yellow. The animals are scrambling to get the last few bites of green grass and clover in the fields as the days get shorter.

John and crew have been scrambling to get the barn renovations completed, shoring up the posts and beams, pouring new footers and concrete slabs, and replacing the 100-year-old siding and gates. Fencing and watering system repairs are getting attention.

And, the farm house which has had some long standing mold issues are being addressed. Come to find out the bathroom was built right over an old historic well. So, the bathroom was demolished to expose and renovate the well. Then, the bathroom was reinstalled in another room. This resolved some of the mold, but gutter repairs and replacing the south-side house siding is next to see if that improves the air quality.

We tore out the insulation and are drying out the Tiny House crawl space which got wet and moldy from Helena last year. Once it’s dry and mold-free, we will install new insulation. It also got hit by a tree last month. So, we have been cutting up massive oak limbs and putting the porch back together again. We will have plenty of firewood for next year and now that that’s done, we don’t need to worry any more about that tree hitting the house.

Fortunately, the weather has been cooperative and we have been checking tasks off the list. The morning air has been cool and we lit up the wood stove for the first time as we enjoy the cooler days and the beauty that autumn promises.

We are grateful for the rich lives we have, connected with the farm, our families, our Simply Grassfed community, and with God.

John and Alvin Fisher grew up milking and caring for the cows on their father’s farm in the 1980’s. Currently, Alvin operates the farm with forty-eight A2 Jersey cows that are rotationally grazed on chemical-free pastures and milked twice daily.

As the herd size continues to grow on the farm, Alvin plans to convert the milking stalls into a milking parlor.

In a milking stall program, all the cows are led in to their own stall and the milking machines are carried from stall to stall. This operation works best with 2 people. When all the cows are milked, they are all led back to the pasture.

In a parlor set up, the cows come in single file, 4 cows are milked at a time, and then led out and back to the pasture. This method allows one person to milk 4 cows at a time without having to bend over for hours. This strategy should cut the milking time and labor in half.

Alvin has completed the new parlor design and demolition of the stalls will be happening soon.

We are very excited about the upgrade and being able to expand the operation in order to meet the growing demands for our Alpine Heritage Creamery A2 100% Grass Fed Raw Cheeses [https://simplygrassfed.com/store/organic-raw-cheese].

In the meantime, this is what Milking Time looks like twice a day for Alvin’s family, as they grow some of the healthiest milk which Alpine Heritage Creamery turns into our delicious and nutritious artisanal raw cheeses for you and your family.

Let’s give a big thank you to Alvin and Sadie for doing this important work every day!
